A grove of Huisache has been growing wild in one area of southwest Austin for as long as I can remember. But Austin is listed as as zone 8b. Huisache is more likely to survive when planted in a protected area or when planted in a heat-island city. However, flowering is more often damaged by freezes in the northern part of its range. The USDA does list this plant as native in a couple of north Texas counties, but the majority of its range is south of Bell County.

Thanks mindshift. I could place it on the south side of my house where it would be protected from the cold winds. The other thing I could do is grow it as a bonsai.

I think There are some right off of Souwest parkway Just outside of Austin. I don't see many further up in the hill country. On bad winters, the get damaged. They bloomed late this year even though it was a mild winter.

It's probably too cold here for them. I could try growing it like a bonsai but that's if the seeds sprout lol.
