Bed frames with drawers on the bottom are great for small spaces.

Thanks for the suggestions...I want to use the mattress that we have in the room...Would anyone suggest constructing our own Murphy bed?

If you want to use the existing matress, I would go with the bed frame with drawers in the bottom. A bookshelf filling the entire wall next to the fireplace would look great. You could use cabinets with doors in the lower part for some hidden storage space too. I personally would make an accent wall painted a cream color to brighten the room and give more sense of space.

I would move the artwork you have hanging in the small corner to one of the larger walls to give it more protagonism and hang something smaller there.

Hi :) when I read your description I thought the room would be very small! But it isn't- I agree lightening the wall colour will help greatly, but it does feel big enough for your existing furniture and a desk on the left hand side when you walk in... This way you wouldn't feel like you have to manoeuvre around the bed to get to your desk- so good flow

Iv seen this in real- and it is amazing how easy it is to pull up- no effort required and solid as anything.

It is a little ugly lol but you can change a few things/wood colour etc

Best thing is when you fold the bed down- the desk stays perfectly horizontal so you don't have to clear anything off it, and nothing falls/tilts.

I'm not sure if they have a version like this near u but worth considering the new technology since Murphy beds

Appreciate all the comments! I agree a bookshelf along the side wall would look great but how would you incorporate a desk into it? Should the wood be shelves and desk be the same material as the bed? Would you paint all of the walls? What color?

You could check Ikea. They have combination bookshelves/desks. I think it should be similar shades if not the same. I would suggest painting all the walls a light gray or gray green that worked with the fireplace. I would paint the radiator the same color.

Thanks again for your help! Any suggestions for furniture? I can find a bed and dresser but can't find a desk...Ideally the desk would let me do paperwork but Also serve as I place to do some hobbies like editing photos or sewing...

Try a foldaway table or one with leaves, so you can easily extend it for hobbies- greater work surface- but then fold down again when using as a normal desk.

Keep existing furniture. Buy desk and bed frame at estate sale or craigslist, paint Them. Paint fireplace the same cream color as your trim. Keep fireplace surround black. paint walls a light neutral, such as light gray, Light tan, Or light sage green. Get a white comforter that has a cover with it, So that you can wash it. Then Use your favorite artwork or toss pillows an throw at end of bed to add color and personality. Have fun with each choice. Enjoy the hunt and creativity.

I don't normally like beds on an angle but I wonder if it might work in your case? Then there'd be room to have small night stands. And more room for chair between bed and desk.

Not sure if you are planning to repaint or whether it is just furnishings you want. I would suggest a unit incorporating a desk, filing cabinet, room for a chair and draws if there is room. Use some of the space above the desk for books and/or paintings. Place this on the wall as you walk into the room. This would help centre the fireplace. If you have room to place a side table next to the bed perhaps place one only on the other side of the bed to allow more space as you walk in and a dresser at the end of the bed

Again, I really appreciate all your suggestions...Before there was a bed in the room we used to have an Ikea EXPEDIT shelving unit/desk combination next to the fireplace (at the foot of the bed in the picture)...It looked sharp as it fit perfectly in that space...we sold it when we had a baby and moved the queen bed into the room...Because it fit so nicely I thought about buying it again and having a Murphy bed closet constructed so that the bed can stand up along the wall when you walk in but wonder if the mattress will loose its integrity or if the unit will look too big or if it will be a hassle to pull the bed out each time we need it...Any thoughts?! I think the option of putting a desk along the far wall is a good idea too but can't find a desk that has furniture to match....

We had that unit but bigger and in a dark brown....the only place it would work is along the back wall by the fireplace if the bed was propped up...if it was on the other wall when you walk in the desk would look odd

One other thought is to get a bedroom set and have dresser against large wall...get rid of filing cabinet and put desk there...although would be a small desk
