California Sunset this year

I've had a Cali Sunset for a while but it became apparent that it had some sort of root deficiency and repotting/root pruning didn't help. Last year I turned it into cuttings and it was a good decision because now I have several healthy plants that are already blooming.

I do really like the blooms on this one. Sometimes the yellow looks more like a very light burnt orange, definitely conjures up visions of a sunset. They have thick/sturdy petals as well. Because of previous issues I can't say a whole lot about growth habit yet.

Anyone have a mature plant, several years old? I'm curious about the actual growth habit.

OP asked for a pic of older JJ CS tree, here’s mine...in ground about 2 yrs, 5-7 yr old tree. It’s about 48-50” tall and has required staking to promote upward growth and decrease limb breakage. Not quite as lateral in growth pattern as Penang P is, but definitely a ‘spreader’. I have another one just as old, that’s not nearly as big but still blooms like a machine:

Very nice! My California sunset is starting to go off. I will post pictures in a couple days. I have it close to my penang peach so that I can compare the two. They look almost identical in growth habit. But i think maybe the CS blooms are bigger. I dont have a CS (opted for Penang Peach instead) but I have also noticed that sometimes you get a "sport" cutting which is just a dog as a performer but then oddly you can take a cutting of it and you might get a great performing plant.

Eventually I just end up throwing away the sport and keeping the better performing cutting.

I have had an Intense Rainbow that I rooted 3 years and it has literally only grown about 2 or 3 inches since it rooted. I may try and recut it, but more than likely I'll give it away.

That looks great, Chris! A lot of pink in some of those flowers. What has your high temperature been? Up to the mid 90's here although sometimes I feel like temp has an effect on colors and other times I feel like maybe it is something else.

Thanks! This was mid 90s. Very high humidity as well, which I hear has an effect..

Temps coupled with humidiy is what really affects color.

Here's my Cal Sunset in pretty warm weather. Compare to my Penang Peach in warm weather. Even though these two plants can look identical (fragrance, leaves, form, flowers) I think the warm weather brings out more oranges in the Penang Peach. Anyone else have both of them?

This is my all time favorite Penang Peach picture from Dave. I have both of them. Very hard to tell the difference. Maybe more oranges like Dave said on PP, but I have noticed CS to have bigger blooms.

Hello. I hope it is OK to post this here.

This *may be* CA Sunset. I posted about trying to ID it under "What Plumeria Is It?" and this is my best guess so far about it's variety. It is a few years old, growing about 6-8"/y in a 15 gal pot.

Sadly my Penang Peach is not blooming yet, so can't compare flowers. As Chris noted above the pink presence seems to vary on these a lot with temp.
