Take it from a person (me) who has slate tile flooring throughout the bottom floor of our home (all 2,000 sq ft of the downstairs, OMG do NOT get slate tile flooring in your home! HUGE MISTAKE! It was here when we moved in. Uneven and you trip on it. But most of all hard to clean... can't mop it because water stays in the grooves of each tile and in the grout lines. You can't steam clean it because it does the same thing. Even when you seal it (which you should do to any porous tile) gookie stuff seeps through the tile. Oh and it's gross. We are paying $5,000 to have it removed from our house! Choose another flooring.

Yeah, I just felt people should know about the truth about slate. And on another note that I forgot to mention... it is really a BAD idea to put it in showers too. Why? As I mentioned, we have it on ALL of our downstairs flooring... including in the bathroom. The tiles surrounding our toilet started turning to "mush" and we couldn't figure out why. We found out we have a leak under the toilet. So slate that is continually exposed to water will turn to mush and it will mold. People. JUST SAY NO!!!!!

The home I grew up in, had slate floors throughout much of the house. The house is rather old, not sure if the slate being sold now is different...but it was easy to clean, and aged well...
I know one must be careful about sealing slate...perhaps that is the source of the problems?

I agree, re: natural (stone) slate tiles when you purchase the cheap stuff and then have a poor installation and poor maintenance, can be a disaster. However, this tile by Edimax is actually a porcelain tile. Extremely durable, a breeze to install and maintain. The look of slate without the hassles!

well this was the REAL expensive stuff. When we brought several flooring companies in to look at the cost of the removal, they said that these were the top of the line that the former homeowner had put in. They also found that they "permanently" put them on the floor... first with a commercial grade moisture bonding agent/mesh, then they used thinset and sealed all of them. The tiles themselves are not uneven, it is the groves in the tiles that only real slate tile has. But they were laid correctly... too good. It will take more than a diamond grinder to get this crap up.

I've had a different experience with the slate floor in my kitchen - water does get in the grooves when mopping and some raised pieces broke off a bit at first but it's been a great floor and still looks as beautiful as when it was installed over 15 years ago. I sealed it occasionally at first but not in the last several years. It's held up so we'll I'm actually using the same floor in my bathroom remodel!
