SMALL DEN AREA off kitchen -- NEED HELP!!

last modified: 6 years ago

Small den area - approx. 11' x 11' next to our kitchen. These are our only bookshelves in the house & will have books in addition to some travel collectibles, etc. They came with really nice trim (crown, etc.) but if I push them together, have to have internet cords etc. MOVED as they are under end table in center.

Just downsized, so have LOTS OF STUFF to sort through, but trying hard not to overload house as I've really enjoyed a more minimal "existence" the last few months. This new blind has already "failed" and is going back to store -- will be replaced by plantation shutter now on order. Purchased natural fiber rug yesterday (my first) and am looking for 2 smaller profile chairs for in front of bookcases. Wondering ...

1-Love the credenza/granite top (family piece) & could easily paint it ... does it work?

2-Should TV be mounted on wall; I like to see it from kitchen where I spend a lot of time ....

3-DH has Civil War pistols (3 or 4) & 2 CW rifles ... what about mounting them in this room?

4-Should chairs offer a pop of color (teal or navy?) or stay on neutral palette?

5-Also have 3 antique wall clocks that could be hung above credenza if the TV "LEFT THE ROOM".

REALLY APPRECIATE ANY & ALL INPUT!! (Sorry Pix are dark - room is light & bright!)

How about spreading the bookshelves apart and wall mounting the TV between them on an articulated arm you can adjust to watch from the kitchen? Use the granite topped piece in another area. Then you can put a pair of armchairs on the TV wall.

I don't mind the bookcases the way they are. If you can swivel the TV stand, I'd leave it as is; otherwise, on that same wall on an arm should allow both uses.

The two chairs look totally lost in the space, however, like someplace you'd use for a kid's time-out. I'd go for a couple of armchairs that you'd actually want to sit in to read or watch TV, or one armchair and a loveseat under the window.. Put a table lamp on the small table, or better yet, get a bigger table that would extend forward into the room between the two chairs. Try to create the feeling of a place somebody might sit to talk to the chef or to talk to another seated person...

P & K ... actually previous owner used this space as office which I did for about 2 weeks, but didn't like having a "full" desk greet me everyday so moved home office to spare bedroom. Considered putting dining table there, but there's another dining area through doorway past stove. Again, didn't like having kitchen mess by (guest) dining area. Florida room beyond kitchen has informal table where we eat most meals & that overlooks our nice view of golf course.

Since you're downsizing...what about having one bookcase on the wall where the current tv is?

Get a narrow console for the other side for the tv and the plug in necessities...you can get lazy susans for tv's that should give you just enough swivel to be able to see the tv from the prep area...

Get a couple of lovely comfy chairs...I would be tempted to do white slipcovered ones...depends on your preferences of course...

ACM ... OOPS ... forgot to mention the chairs pictured ARE LEAVING. Looking for a pair of smaller profile armchairs, tho we're taller, so need at least 19" seat height. Any suggestions? (looking on Wayfair, etc.)

P ... like the idea of white slipcovered ones. Suggestions on where to find ...?

As with anything, it depends on budget.

I'm currently sitting in a Pottery barn rocker (comfort I think it's called) with matching ottoman.

It's advertised as a nursery chair, but why? It's smashing for tv watching and holds me and a dog.

Just saw that you love your credenza...then it will work just fine with a coat of paint...of course I would do white...

You would have a nice white on white look going on...get pillows and throw in a color you love...rug too if you feel like changing it...but the rug you have would look lovely with white chairs...

I would take the plunge and have the outlets/hookups moved so you can push the bookcases together and make them look more like a single piece of furniture. As they are now, they don't leave much wall revealed on either side, which makes them look a bit out of scale for that wall. The credenza is nice, but it looks a little insulted that it's wearing a television set. I like the idea of a wall mount - maybe one of those framed jobbies that hides the cords.

Personal choice about collection of guns, but with a white kitchen nearby, it almost doesn't sound good - if a rustic country house...

or 'up' the color / pattern of rug or curtains that'd fit the look.
