I have no idea what I'm doing.

I would really appreciate some help. My walls are beige, I have no idea if I should paint the walls. Curtains or no curtains? I would love to keep most of the stuff, but I'm willing to part with the red chair and wicker chair, as well as the little brown foot rest. I am also willing to reapulster them if need be. There's also a really long wall, and my ceilings are all different sizes. Did I mention I have a random arched window? :( Please help

I would move dining table to section of room where you have random chairs. Place smaller chair between new dining space and TV space. TV Needs to be lowered. Get a small bistro type table and a couple chairs for quick breakfast or cup of coffee and relaxing. You need block out drapery to get control over some light. Hang just under ceiling. Try that.

For starters, paint the ceiling a true white OR Farrow and Ball’s BORROWED LIGHT. The walls are all begging for art: you could use large pieces or gallery groupings of same size pieces - or a combination of both. Nowhere do you seem to be able to sit and look out. The TV set up would be fine in a basement rec room, but it doesn’t work with your furniture. Lamps and rugs with more colour would help a lot. If there’s another room where the TV could go, a lot of problems would be eliminated.

In addition to other comments that I like, your ceiling fans and lights do nothing for your room style wise. If they are really good fans consider replacing the blades with new that are close to your ultimate ceiling color.
There are many styles of lights you can replace the current ones with to reflect your style. The existing lights are glaring and need to be filterd by the 'shade' or direction of the light.
However, consult a lighting specialist to avoid strobe-lights 1960's style when both fans and lights are on.
Don't use the fans ever? Replace with fixture you love.
Whew, that was a long winded idea!

Have you noticed that almost everything is a different version of BROWN? Pink-brown, beige-brown, tan-brown, Gray-brown, red-brown, and brown-on-brown.
The tv is too too high for comfortable viewing unless you are standing, and it is attached to a brown wood board.
First: decide what furniture is in good condition and what you will keep.
Is this a rental or do you own it? If you own it, you can paint the walls and change the carpet.
Reduce the number of pillows on the sofas by getting rid of all the brown ones. Keep the reddish chair for now, and put the rattan chair elsewhere. Remove the wood thing and hang the tv at eye level to a seated adult.
There aren’t any table lamps or floor lamps. Is the ceiling fan/light sufficient to light the living room after dark?
You have plenty of daylight from your windows, but the only window treatments are blinds. The addition of drapery panels at the sides of the windows will add texture and color (unless you buy more brown).
Buy one piece of framed art for the dining area. Move the living room rug to the dining area IF it measures 4’ wider and 4’ longer than the dining table measurements.
Those measurements will allow the easy use of chairs around the table. The color of the rug will help break up the brown of the dining area.Center the table under the light fixture. Move the baby chair to the far left corner.
That’s a start. Post a photo after you have made any changes.

If you want to leave the dining table where it is, move the counter stools around the corner so you have room to center the table under the light. Add art to the dining wall and soft roman shades to all the windows. If you move it to the chair end of the living space, drop a chandelier instead of the fan light. Fan lights are not functional for lighting a room; table and floor lamps are. The wall color works well with your furniture, but the warm installed carpet is contradicting all of that. If you own, start collecting a budget to replace it. The TV is a major issue. Remove the board, lower the TV and put a credenza under it. Use the coffee table as designed, 18" or less from the 3-seat sofa.

It looks like you have a very pretty kitchen! And even though you have some issues, just like EVERYONE does, you also have some good things! I also have the weird ceilings. Can make it confusing, I know, but just have to divert attention to walls and furniture! Also, although I like white ceilings, I paint my odd ones the wall color to try to make them less apparent.

I’d be tempted to put in a banquette under the kitchen windows and along the wall. It looks like your windows are high enough above the floor to fit one and it would give you more space. You would need to move your chandelier, which actually looks a little off center to the table right now? There are many ideas on line explaining how to do this without great expense or skill! Also, use that back wall for a pop of art. Don’t be afraid to go big! My son blew up some of his travel pics online in canvas and they came out great! You could pick sizes of pics you love of people or places and have them printed on canvas. Another great way to add color, so have that in mind when you pick pics.

All vote to lower the TV. Hope your partner in crime doesn’t mind helping with that! Try to find a slim cabinet of some sort to put below it. It looks a little lonely. My friend put a dresser under hers, (she had quite a bit of space) but any sort of thin cabinet or even floating shelf would do! (See IKEA website). There are cord covers that easily stick to walls and can be painted the wall color. Don’t want to see an electric cord! Ask at Home Depot or Lowes.

Move sofa back as far as you can, leaving 3 feet behind it.

Swap the loveseat and overstuffed chair. This will make it seem less tight by the TV. Put the love seat on the wall near the arch window and give it a small ottoman or coffee table. Find a large piece of art for over the love seat. The wingback may be able to be used to the left of the TV and right of the arched window but facing the loveseat completing a different seating group. If that doesn’t work, try the small chair in that spot.

It looks like there is carpet. If so, I may not use the rug. It seems to make the space look smaller to me. Maybe use rug under the kitchen table?

There are many dark things. May want to find ways to bring light. I have seen soft blues and creams used well with browns to soften things.

Let us know how it goes!

Love the other comments, but I also thought everything was brown... looks grey in newer pics! I really wish the carpet could be replaced with something light, though. Any chance?

See BethH: Noticed these things in before and after pics - the rug is totally under the sofa and neither the rug nor the furniture is too close to the wall with the tv. You would also have space for a small chair facing the tv grouping like that. It is very similar to your place! I loved some of the slim cabinets she showed in pics, too. We are all pulling for you!

First of all, what's working and what's not working for YOU in your space? You're wondering about curtains. I see the TV is on in the daytime and I'm thinking you need light control (as Flo suggested). What's your budget? That will determine the extent of any changes. Lots of great ideas shared already but what appeals to YOU? You have one picture in your ideabook and it's cream upholstery with blue accents. Is that a colour scheme you'd like for your space? Do you like your beige walls? Do you own or rent?

My first thought seeing your pictures was center the dining table under the chandelier and add whatever art you love on your walls. Art adds life to a space. Without it, a space looks forlorn, imo. It can take a bit of time to find something you love enough to want to hang it on your walls but it's worth a bit of patience.

Thank you all for the comments!! My furniture is grey, but the lighting is terrible! The rug is grey, whith white details. I will definitely be making some changes. I work nights, so as soon as I wake up, I will be moving furniture!! My husband is aware that we will be lowering the TV as well. The dining table is usually under the chandelier, but I was moping the floor so i had to move the table a little off center to really scrub :) I will definitely add some color to the walls! Attached is a picture of what my sofas really look like. Again thank you all for the help, and if some of you still have more comments, I would definitely appreciate it! :) Thank you!

Start by optimizing your lighting. That can be expensive but it's worth it because you end up living with your true colours. Lighting is everything when it comes to colours. If you start choosing wall colours before changing your bulbs, you might end up with colours you hate. Good luck with everything. Hope you keep us posted with your changes.

Dj j. I noticed a flowered banner in the showroom photo you posted and this is great color inspiration. I also played with. Couple new light fixtures.

that artwork behind that sofa (two comments up, purple flowers,) is a perfect match for yours! you need something like it on your walls.

looks like the sofa is more of a lavender gray tone? is that correct?

To add to everyone’s comments I would add a bar to where you dining area is or if make it an accent wall. When I first saw your post I was thinking something in blue until I saw your look book, you like some of the blue decor. Would you be willing to change everything? I did a mock up of what you might like.

What would you think of switching out the throw pillows for something more colorful? With so many large neutral pieces, I think the space would benefit from the addition of a few coordinating colors. What colors do you like? Do you have other pieces you can use as inspiration?

Will definitely add more color to the couches!! and yes, I can change the throw pillows! thank you all so much!

Before you do anything you need to ask yourself why you are making changes, and exactly what you want to accomplish. How do you want the room to feel and function? That will help guide all your decisions. If you want a light and airy room, I think a beautiful light wall color would really help your space. But maybe you want warm and cozy. In that case I would look for a deeply colored rug. Do you like neutral and serene? Then you need to add lots of texture with your accessories. Look at photos to determine how you want your space to feel.

Can see the challenge with the length of the room. The temptation is to create two distinct groupings (either two seating areas or as suggested above, seating and dining), but that seems disjointed and it makes my disobedient eye go to the middle of the space where there's nothing, rather than to one of the two groupings. Also, neither of the two zones really seems large enough to let your nice upholstered pieces live up to their potential.

What do the experts think about moving the TV closer to the center of that long wall and creating a single, generous grouping with console tables, lamps, etc. at the fringes of the room, rather than forcing two groupings into the space?

Scale might be way off, but here’s what I mean.

By the way, do you have super-sliders for moving furniture? Greatest invention ever!

    Also take the carpet off.

Looks like everything has pretty much been covered except move the coffee table to within 18" of the sofa so you can actually set a drink on it.
