I would paint the fireplace white. It would brighten up the room. The trims are brown and dark. The tan will look nice. For the shelves- it depends on what the shelves are made of. Is it laminated? Wood? I would paint it a brown ton.

I agree with Dytecture to leave the brick. You might consider, though, repointing the brick joints with a white mortar - this will add a 'white wash' while keeping the main brick color. To me the biggest challenge is the existing cabinets/shelves. Starting over with new ones would really freshen up the wall; and I'd consider a contrasting color on the lighter side, like white, maybe with an open back to see your sand paint color.

What color is the window trim, and is it paintable? Love the floors!

I'd paint the walls with Benjamin Moore's Beach Haven, and the cabinets Urban Nature, with their back walls in Night Horizon or left natural. I like the way objects look against a dark background.

Do the best you can to keep the brick unpainted!

IF IT WERE ME:
SHELVES: I would paint the back/wall of the cupboard the same colour you are painting the walls and re-paint, just the shelves and doors, a nice solid dark brown to contrast the fire place and the wall colour.(match the windows?)
FIRE PLACE: Maybe just have the colour removed off the fire place and then decide. If the brick is a nice face brick it will look lovely with the floor colour. Could also lighten and neaten up the grouting on the fire place. A nice tile on the base of the file place. (Just the area on which the mirror is resting.)
EXTRA: Nice/Pretty crown moulding to soften the roof and draw the eye up.
But that's if it were me ;)

I'd paint it all. I would paint out all the trim and casework in a creamy off white. Paint the back of the upper shelving units the same as the wall color - I would definitely paint the brick out - but in a deeper tan than the walls. You are going to need to pick out your tan to work with your flooring - here are some warm camels with a good undertone for hickory - test sw whole wheat for the brick and sw believable buff for the walls - dover white on all trim and casework. Fill hardware holes on casework before you paint / maybe add a magnet catch system so you can go w/out hardware. These doors and the arched cornice and brickwork are going to signal a rustic or cottage style - if that is not you, then pull down the arched cornice board and replace the doors before you paint. The arched brick over the fireplace alone won't do that. I think it adds charm (except for the hardware) I suggest you have an electrician come and add just a few things / new lighting before you paint - off the ceiling lights you can pull new ceiling washers for each bookcase and use the center one to aim at the mantle, and try a drop drum, lantern or orb fixture in the central light for a wholly modern look. They can put all of these on dimmers so you have options for mood lighting. Even simple fixtures can do a lot for you here.

This one is similar with the cases on each side. Layer in the lightness and neutral. With pops of color that pull the fireplace across the room. This one as medium oak floors and I cozy neutral area rug

Keep the fireplace as is, and paint shelves and trim white or off white. Rip those doors off the shelf fronts. I love the arches on the shelves, but the doors detract from the overall look.

The arches on the shelves repeat the fireplace arch. You could do a mantel in wood or have some floating shelves for a more contemporary look.

I really like the color of the brick with the new Hickory floors, so I wouldn't paint the brick. But I would paint the cabinets and window trims a lighter sand color to brighten up the room. Good luck with your project! You are off to a good start with your flooring choice.
