We are building an in-law suite/apartment in our walkout basement. The ceiling height will be around 7'2". My husband is very focused on maintaining all the height we can and wants to use only recessed lights. He is planning for 6" pot lights in every room/bathroom/closet of the basement, totaling around 40 recessed lights. I'm not a huge fan of these lights. Aside from aesthetics, my concern is that the recessed lights will increase the transmission of sound between the floors. Our house was built around 1920 and our wood floors are very creaky. (And my 10 year old stomps around like an elephant). Do recessed lights cause a problem for soundproofing? Does anyone have any advice to share on lighting a basement apartment? Half of the apartment is on the ground floor, with full size windows and glass doors, so it will have some natural light.
