Louvered closet doors are difficult to paint. The slats make a smooth, thorough finish nearly impossible to obtain. I would update the hardware, embrace the wooden closet doors and paint something else.

If the wood is a big stumbling block measure the doors and go to Home Depot/Lowes/etc. if the doors are a standard size you could replace them fairly inexpensively.
