When a sink is integrated into a counter top, we recommend our clients use our SatinSeal finish. It is low sheen, durable and waterproof. We love it because it doesn't look a bar top with a heavy glaze.

Any issues with wooden countertops around a gas range?

That's not a problem. We have built many tops around gas ranges. We put a piece of heat reflective tape around the edges as a precaution. It is not visible, of course.

Stain is to alter the color of a wood. Walnut is rich (and pricey) on its own and you wouldn't want to change it's color. Finish- however is necessary to bring out that natural color and to protect the wood over time. With inset sink - SatinSeal waterproof finish. Has some sheen, not to be cut upon or you'd break that surface seal. Some people prefer the more traditional matte look of the Natural Oil + Wax finish- which is more a cutting board style treatment that requires regular re-oiling (easy) to maintain it original luster- more so in wet zones...

Laura- I think the flooring is California Chestnut, wide plank, antique distressed with a dark cherry oxidized colorant under an natural oil finish.

I am looking to do butcher block on my counter and one carpenter said he doesn't recommend it near the sink. What are your thoughts?

I have 10+ yr old walnut counter tops and would never recommend them. When new - beautiful, but hard to keep clean without ruining them. If you don't cook much, perhaps they'll hold up better. For a family kitchen, durability is key.
