Help with countertop selection

last modified: 7 years ago

Would love some feedback on countertop selection!! Cabinets will be traditional style in white with beige floor tile. i’m trying to choose a counter that goes well with the floor tile (doesn’t clash). I’m liking #6 (Calcutta gold) but wondering if it’s too much grey?

I’m gonna wait to decide on backsplash until after the cabinets and counters are installed.

Thx!

Stephanie

Thanks for your feedback. The floor tile is already installed in our kitchen from a few years back. I'd like to keep it as is and hope to find something that works with it.

One looks good....six doesn't show up in the pic. Door is detail laden . One is the best I think

This may be a better photo. I tried to post it earlier but it wouldn’t post. Not sure why.

As for the cabinet being design laden, I’m not a fan of the shaker style/flat door style. Also, the photo of the door looks a bit wonky..maybe from the shadows or lighting?? The house was built in the early 90’s and has a bunch of built-ins shelves & cabinets with a similar door style so I’m trying to stay with that look.

one three or four. six is too cool/grayish, probably. Not concerned about details on door..its a good classic design....point is....the surfaces [counter and backsplash] can remain rather plain….the door speaks for itself. With beautiful hardware and your other things....you don't need the counter to have much going on.

    One here as well.

sorry but all your samples look like the floor. i would go in a different direction.

your cabinets make a strong statement, in a good way, and your floor has movement in it., so would look at counters with little to no movement. you can accentuate with accessories - art, towels, rugs, appliances etc....

for this application i would do a neutral, solid counter.

i would pick out the counter and b/s together so you are not looking fffooorrreeevvveeerrr for the b/s.

bring a cabinet door, floor tile and your paint color with you to the stone yards or wherever you are going for the counter and b/s...

Sprtphntc7a... Yes.. my head is spinning just thinking about backsplash. would this be what you’re referring to regarding a neutral/solid counter?

I was also thinking of something like this but I couldn’t figure out the countertop style. Maybe it’s the Tigris Sand?

yes, a solid would be quartz....

you can do a granite but a solid with little to no movement would more than likely by dark brown, black or gray... Virginia Mist comes to mind....

you could also do corian if that is an option for you..

would you entertain a dark option for granite?

soapstone? if un-oiled would be a light gray but very pricey....

i think your best is to take your samples to the stone yard. be sure you are in natural light or if inside have them put and incandescent light on it. that's what i did b/c the overhead lighting usually has a blue tint to it and it throws off the actual color., ugh, i know its exhausting....

if you are ok without real stone, than i would go with quartz or corian and u should be able to get the color you really want w/o too much headache. that should also make it easier for B/S

Stephanie, the counter in that last photo you posted is a quartzite called Taj Mahal. It would look beautiful with your floor. I have a similar travertine floor like you have with a lot of movement. I was between Taj Mahal and the Frosty Carrina because neither of them would clash with the floor. I ended up choosing the Caesarstone Frosty Carrina and a white backsplash. I think the counter looks good with the floor because the veining is very subtle.

drsaj, Thanks for the tip on Taj Mahal! I hadn't looked at that one yet or considered quartzite. Something to definitely consider as I love the movement. Not sure how it'll go with my floor so I'll need to get a sample.

sprtphntc7a, I hadn't considered dark grey or black. My current cabinets are honey oak with white laminate counters and a tan corian island counter. I'm so use to the lighter colors that I hadn't thought of going that dark. Something to consider. I believe the kitchen is North facing as it is pretty dark & dull so I'm hoping to lighten it up with the white cabinets. We're going to replace the "yellow" recessed lights with the newer LED recessed lights to hopefully that'll help as well. I'm tired of living in the dungeon. :)
