Deer are especially active on warm nights.

Well Julia , that just sucks! How Heartbreaking ! Would hanging aluminum pie pans throughout the garden keep them at bay at least till the blooms start or do they eat open blooms too ? I have no idea , we have deer around here but I dont believe they would venture into my gardens with my doggies on patrol ( although they are not out at night )

So sorry you lost those scapes. It's so horrible when you realize the buds were chomped. The smell of Liquid Fence makes me sick. I much prefer Bounce strips and the Gain/water spray. So far I've been lucky and deer haven't snacked on my buds. I need to spray again after the all rain we've had.

My sympathies. Deer and Japanese Beetles are two pests that I don't have (so far) but know too many people that do. Do Deer not eat the foliage? Just the Buds?..............Maryl

Bobbex stinks too, but it was the highest-rated deer repellent in a University of Connecticut study. After seeing a little deer damage, we sprayed the buds two times a week apart and have not seen any more deer damage. Cross my fingers and toes.

Maryl: They did not touch the foliage and just went for the buds. However, very early in the season they did chomp down several clumps of daylilies in that same bed including Magic of Oz.

Those buds are so tasty, especially with a little barbecue sauce.

Every morning when I wake up, I go do a 'deer damage check'. They wiped out a lot of my daylily buds and roses last summer and I've seen deer across the road in the woods. I have sprayed with the Gain like Debra uses, and so far, so good.....but with rain, sometimes I don't get to refreshing it. I expect the worse but will be delighted if they don't do their annual damage. We do have deer deterrent motion detection sprayers but they have to be hooked up to long hoses and I have too many gardens everywhere to protect most of them. I am SO SORRY for the loss of those beautiful buds. I know how it feels and you and I have waited patiently to finally get buds! Between the deer and the Japanese beetles it seems we are always waging war out there.

Julia, that makes me sad! I hate that critters can devastate our gardens. I don’t have deer, but rabbits are my nemesis here. Hope the deer stay away.
