also consider.. that the wall holds the heat.. deep into the night... so there is no or little recovery period during the usually cooler night ...

Yeah, I know, like for those who mulch with stone. The wilt literally goes away once it starts shading. So maybeeeee, it's just the smidge of radiant heat that is a bit too much, but it does recover.

Also, on the leeward side of a wall there is less moisture from rain.

Yeah, radiant heat or plants closest to the structure was on my WiKi, but it never did really *register* on my mind, as I've never had plants look affected by it. However, it was clear as day when I had same species/same shrubs - and the ones 9 feet away were not wilting but the latter, closer towards the structure was. And then the lightbulb went off

This is how you zone-push; if you are borderline, plant south-facing against stone. And then pray!
