I love the idea of a brightly colored door but I don't like how that particular turquoise looks with the gray body of the house. In the distance photo, the gray reads slightly periwinkle which doesn't play nicely with the green-blue of the door. The gray looks more neutral (and better with the turquoise) in the close-up shot, so it's hard to know which is more accurate, or whether it's just different lighting.

What is the paint color on the body of the house? You might be able to get suggestions for a vibrant color that works better with it.

I did take the photo when sun was over the house at noon so it is casting a dark shadow, the close up pic was at 5pm. The siding is light gray. I will take a better picture and post. Also we distressed the door a little to still show some of the gray behind it on the details of the door. Everyone has commented how they love the color of my door and we do like it but I wonder if the contrast is too much.

I think the color is fine. Obviously, as you indicated, this is the wrong door for your house. For now, I‘d just remove the wreath since it accentuates the Victorian design of the door. The rest of the house looks great.

It's fine and does draw your eye to the front door, which it is supposed to do.

I would paint the blue pots grey and buy a couple of pillows with the "blue" from

the door to put on the bench - to tie in the color in another area.

Move the bench closer to the front door and buy some weatherstripping to

keep the whistling out.

I presume this may have been your inspo for the reno. Are you planning for this kind of door or something else?

@ decoenthusiast, yes! I did get the planter idea from that photo! The door we were looking at was more farmhouse than that, with hammered look glass and wood paneling on bottom but I was told because we live west facing we have to have custom solid torrid wood doors or else we will keep changing it every 3-5 years. I will post the pic of what door I was thinking of. For now, we are just doing some very easy to eye fixing until we get to the purchase.

I like it! It might take some getting used to coming from the drab grey it was before. I agree with the idea of moving the bench closer to the door and adding some pillows with the door's color in them.

Angel, yes! I will move the door today! And I do have dark blue pillows with the aqua and yellow flowers on it right now. I am however not sure about painting those pots, I do so love that color on it dearly and and I’m afraid to ruin them? I wouldn’t know how to make pots look that glossy.

I don't think you need to paint the pots.

Maybe the pillows with the dark blue and aqua will bring those two colors together...

I moved the bench as suggested ( I actually really like that idea!) that’ll give my kids some extra area to put their shoes on when leaving the house. I also took the picture in the early evening to eliminate the shadows. My husband says he can change the gold gasket and handles to satin nickel and frost the glass? He says that the gold makes the door dated.

Ohhhh I think I might do dark bronze like my lights and my house number?! I will try covering it with tape or see if I can spraypaint it before I change to see if I’d like a darker finish.

Can you post the door you were thinking of? I feel like there is a lot of wood already going on here with the porch tiles and planter box... I LIKE the bright aqua color and think if you could put that on a cheaper door more suitable to the style of the house, you could avoid any concerns about durability.

The door would be a double door but with this style. It has to be customed due to the size of our opening which is only 58” wide. I was also told that we would need a special kind that could withstand the west facing door? Not sure what it is specifically called but we were quoted in the range of $5K for just the door not including install. Yes I agree I have to paint the door because I don’t want it to be matching the ipe porch.

Thanks for posting and clarifying! What about switching up to a single door with sidelights? That might bring the cost down to do a 36" door with 10-11" sidelights. I would also consider a door without the beadboard panel. It is a very specific look that I feel looks dated. We had almost the exact same door but with arched windows and just replaced with a very modern single window option. Here's a few similar options with a cleaner look...

I like your doors. No, they're not farmhouse style but they're gorgeous and they're free. :) (Well, they might be costing you energy-wise but weatherproofing will fix that.) In your newer pictures, I think their new colour with the distressing looks fabulous with the blue pots and siding. I like your husband's idea of frosting the glass to hide the gold (my suggestion was see if you can change the glass) and changing the hardware to match your bronze numbers. Removing the wreath will de-accentuate their Victorian feel, as flopsycat mentioned.

Love the color, not the style. A slightly craftsman or midcentury would look better.

@mnmamax, yes we have thought of single door as well, for some reason my husband likes the double doors he thinks it’s grander but I honestly don’t ever find the need for double since we only open one side ever. Also I thought of one sidelight so we can get one 4 ft heavy door? The reason we went with headboard paneling is to try to match our garage? We have this garage style.

@ tartanmeup is any wreath the actual problem or just the specific wreath I had? I change my wreath according to season and holidays, I have like 8 different kinds! The yellow one I use for spring, this one I have for 4th of July. I also have a few pillows to match each wreath.lol

You may need to redo the weather stripping, if it has deteriorated, or add weather stripping, if it doesn't have any.

I guess I thought you were going for something a little more modern... If this is your style, then carry on. There are lots of paint programs online where you can paint up your doors accents, etc to see the look.

Yes, the wreath is calling attention to the door and it's a traditional accent, I think. If you have 8 different kinds though, you clearly love them so I no longer see a problem. ;-)

What would you think of trying your wreath on one of the walls instead of the door? Maybe to the left of the small window, or on one of the walls perpendicular to the door? You could use a command hook so you don't have to pound nails. Maybe mock up a paper wreath the size yours is and tape it to the wall for a few days - see what you think.

Maybe I post some pictures of our interior to give you an idea of what door we should get? I like a new door but want the old look if that makes sense. Pictures of our main living spaces.

I did a quick mock-up to help visualize a single door with sidelights. Definitely matches the style of your house much better, and looks more modern.

If you're not in the market for a new door, I do like the paint color on your existing doors! Getting rid of the gold trim, changing out the hardware (or painting black or ORB), and having frosted glass would definitely help!

Wow I really do like that single door with side lights! Yes I definitely need ideas for new front door because the door we have is just a temporary fix. I think we are going to replace it sooner or later. It’s good I painted it though because it’s giving me idea on paint colors and what will work with our house. Very weird but I have a whole wall of glass by the door for a tiny atrium so that gives us plenty of light. That was an original design of the house. The door is also off from the wall of entry.

That big window is really nice. Can you plant some kind of flowering bush so you can

see it when the blind is up.

Beautiful home, Junee! I think you have the right idea, I just personally think that door style is dated. I think the one gm_tx photoshopped for you (thank you!!) will definitely coordinate with your garage door but allow for more of a midcentury look should you (or another owner) decide to change it up in a few years. I think your wreaths will look better on the single door too. Do they get stuck in the door now, since you open just one side? Since light is not a concern, you could get the sidelights frosted or obscured for privacy or chose something with a sidelight only on top. 3M makes a bunch of different REMOVABLE films with various textures.

@ Angel, yes I can but it has to be on pots and I have to be more diligent in watering it lol. It honestly could use a water feature since I have an outlet there but no sprinklers.

Mnmamax3, thank you! I did get a lot of help here at Houzz when we renovated! I agree about the door needing replacement 100%! Just need to find the right one that will also not bust the budget! I think going single door was a great idea to lower cost too. Lol my wreath is always a little off to one side and I refused to buy double of the same because then I will run out of room to store everything! That’s a good point to go with single door though! My house is not really MCM, it used to be a ranch then it got converted to two stories. I’ve been going through books of catalogs on every door design and can’t seem to settle on one! Who knew doors could be this difficult to pick.

We love that color! Tying in bright colors is all about adding little nods to your theme throughout your exterior design. Most likely, the biggest pain point here is the style of door and the gold weatherstripping & detailing. When you get your new door we recommend white or black weatherstripping for a cleaner, seamless look. As for the wind whistles - beyond aesthetic purposes your front door should be airtight and watertight. Because it is the original door, the weatherstripping most likely needs to be replaced. If you are planning on replacing the entire door structure this should be a part of your bid, however keep this in mind and make sure! IN THE MEANTIME, try to add some golden and light blue accents around your exterior and interior to tie in the golden detailing. Your current blue, grey, white and brown design will work great with golden accents. However you don't have to go crazy on the gold, a new door, better stripping, and more blue accents outside will solve all of these issues!
