Feedback? First ever Consumer Reports appliance reliability ratings

Please delete if not relevant but I though it might be useful to those who need new appliances. id love to know if the info matches what people here have experienced. I couldn’t find another post here about this.

Consumer Report’s latest issue (also available online) has provided their first ever reliability ratings for appliances .. based on actual feedback from consumers...not just Consumer Reports short term tests . They evaluated 381,000 appliance over a 10 year period, from 2008 through 2018, and listed ratings only on brands where they got enough feedback. Speed Queen rated highest for washers and dryers. Miele, Thermador, Bosch and Whirlpool for dishwashers. IKEA, of all places, had a decent rating for dishwashers. No brand was a shining star for cooktops except Bosch ( we’re looking for an electric cooktop ☹️, suggestions appreciated).

GE and LG stood out for wall ovens.

The worst ratings in most categories were for JennAir, Asko, Fisher and Paylkel, Dacor, and Electrolux.

Viking was the worst in every category

Feedback, anyone? The consumer info goes back only to 2008. Our experience is that our old Whirlpool washing machine , made before 2008 , was wonderful and our Electrolux wall oven, made after 2008, was a stinker (which matches the CR info).

Don't the models change fairly frequently? Are they following each individual model, or the brand as a whole? Honestly Consumer Reports just seems like a money maker to me, so I'm not sure I'd pay it that much mind. I put much more emphasis on customer service ratings.

I have several Fisher & Paykel appliances older than the stated range so I suppose are not relevant. Oldest is a washer & dryer dating to 1999. One pump replacement on the washer. No repairs on the dryer (which is a rebadged GE).

IKEA appliances are largely, if not all, rebadged Whirlpool.

I have subscribed to CR continuously since 1980 or earlier and have not received a survey to fill out in several years, maybe ten? So while I still read their survey results, be aware that not every subscriber is being surveyed.

    Kaylie -

they got feedback on brands for 381,000 appliances, lots of models, but some brands were shining stars only for certain types of appliances. . As an example, GE was rated excellent for wall ovens but not for many other types of appliances.

As far as models changing frequently, I think it depends on the model. Our old oven model was sold for years ( even though it was a stinker amd received terrible ratings as time went in). Our current wall oven model has been made for years... not 10 years, though.

i think they focused on reliability ratings because people complained about the shorter term product tests.

Dadoes- our experience has been that age is a major factor. Our dishwasher lasted well over 15 years but the brand now has a low rating. We also had a decent history with some older Electrolux products but our last oven, an Electolux, was a lemon from day one, That matches its very low rating with CR.

Wow, how did I miss that? I have appliances as a favorited category. I guess further responses should be over there.

i have worked in the appliance industry for just over 10 years now. i would agree speed queen laundry is the most reliable laundry. but i had a good chuckle over the Ikea appliances.

I think Speed Queen for the top loader category.

I have Electrolux front loader with matching dryer. We bought it in 2012. Haven't had one service call, yet. Best machines I ever owned and I've had many. I think it rated high on the CR survey.

I too, have Electrolux front loader with matching dryer, both now 3 1/2 yrs old. Great machines, not a lick of trouble.

Had Whirlpool Duets in our previous home, had many issues with them. The gaskets failed, and the drum needed replacing.

    Highly recommend Electrolux.
