Hot Room Help Please

I need some help, not being a HVAC professional. We live in Tucson in a solid brick home. One of our rooms does not cool sufficiently. The HVAC contractor here said the reason is that the ducting was originally designed for swamp cooling and that we needed to add a new vent closer to the middle of the room. They were going to run about 10 feet of flex tubing in a closet and install a new vent on the other side of the room. Estimated cost of $600. Is this a reasonable cost? Our system conforms to Schedule J calculations. I have been thinking of some alternatives, such as one of the in-room portable a/c units. The problem is that apparently it needs to be vented outside through a window. It seems to me that since we routinely have 100+ degree days, this would allow heat in (since we have specially treated double pane windows to reflect the heat). I think drilling a large hole in a 12 inch thick brick wall would be difficult. Can one just put the exhaust pipe into a return and let the system suck out the exhaust? Any other suggestions would be appreciated!
