I would suspect any number of nocturnal beetles, young katy-dids, and things I call tree crickets. So many holes show up in my stuff overnight...perfect plant yesterday...next morning, WTH!!!

I do see all kinds of beetles around. Bad bug to tunnel a hole like that. Luckily, they don't wipe out all of them, just a few at a time. .....My WTH moments are mostly from the deer. They love to have a midnight snack of my flower buds.

How annoying. Are grasshoppers big enough yet to do that damage? Luckily it looks like you'll still have a great display.

This year I'm seeing grasshoppers much earlier than usual. Whatever eats into the lily buds like that, I'm glad there wasn't much damage caused.

Sandyslopes, Wow! Those lilies are gorgeous! I only have a few lilies in my yard and just decided I need to add more. Do you know what type those are? I just ordered some orienpets, asiatics and another one I can't remember the name of for delivery this fall.

I haven't seen any grasshoppers yet and I hope I don't! They like to eat my dahlia blooms which really makes me mad!

Keep an eye out for the red lily beetle. They will destroy your lilies. Look it up. You have to hand pick twice a day. Their larva cover themselves with a slimy feces. Just a warning to all who read this lily thread.

Linda, thanks! The lilies have responded well to all the extra rain we had this spring. I like lilies but I plant them where cats won't get near them because of the toxic effect of the pollen. I know you have dogs, but it's something to consider. (I love cats so I have to put in a PSA about that.)

I've read the Orientals don't like my alkaline soil, and that seemed to be the case. I did try some Orienpet that came back for a while but then faded away, too. I hope you have good luck with yours. The Asiatics do best for me and this is one that's called 'White Pixels'. I also have some Chinese Trumpet Lilies that come back and look good except they are so tall they need staking or they flop with the weight of the flowers.

GardenHo, thanks for making me laugh! I will excuse the dog vomit fungus. :-) I had that once on my mulch pile, and it's such strange looking stuff. I was worried a deer got sick.

Your lilies aren't the same as these, but they sure are pretty! I've found it's hit or miss when it comes to how they're pictured and how they really look in my yard. Here's a better closeup of these Asiatic 'White Pixels'.....

susan, that's what I was wondering, if this was an easily identifiable problem. I'm lucky it only happens once in a while and only to a few at a time. I hope we never get those red lily beetles because they do a lot of damage. That's a good warning for people to look up if they find this thread and are having a bad problem.

Sandyslopes, thanks for the info. Those lilies are so pretty! I don't have cats and I never see them around either. If the neighbors have cats, they must keep them indoors. I have some oriental lilies in my yard that I have had for years. They are not blooming yet but should be soon. I will take a pic when they finally open. I like them because they bloom after the Asiatics and daylilies have finished blooming and I am always looking for plants that will bloom later in summer. Hopefully the Orienpets like my yard :-)
