Butternut and Burgess buttercup

July 2, 2019

I have a few of these growing in the field. Because they are sprawling and I have high weed grass, it is difficult to see the young fruit forming. While I can see many fruits on other squashes such as delicata and zuchinnis, I don't see many of the butternut and Burgess. Does anyway have experience with these? Are they late bloomers or maybe the pollinators have a hard time getting to the flowers because of the weeds?

They certainly don't like the competition of weeds. That may be holding them back. They are winter squash with a long growing season so expect them to much later than zucchini. Most varieties of C, maxima ( The buttercup) take about a 100 days. C. moshata ( butternut) average about 90 days.
