pull back the mulch.. take a small hand trowel.. or a tablespoon.. and just gently dig down and FIND OUT ...

the crown should basically be right there.. no digging... if you find it down an inch or 3.. it needs to be lifted ...

it one of the few that are just about sun proof... it should be granny apple green ... its hard looking at a camera pic.. but its not far off imo ...

the first pic is a bit washed out on contrast ... but the little leaves in the second pic.. look about right for color ... in full shade ...

if you have royal standard.. they are the same color ...

did it have the 6 inch pure white flowers??? ... that is definitive on Id.. since no other hosta has them that big ... and flowers dont change size the bigger the plant gets ...

and if it didnt.. it might be RS

The color looks right but the whole shape of the plant looks differnt from my plantaginea. Is it the same color all year Or does it come up yellow in the spring?

Well, I'm not doubting its identity... when it bloomed before I actually measured the flowers and they were every bit of 6 inches. And of course they smelled like heaven and were beautiful as well!

I just wondered if it looked healthy because I thought maybe it was supposed to be somewhat darker green. But Ken - yes, I have a Royal Standard and it's about the same color, so I guess all is well in that department.

It's raining today (probably going to mess up the fireworks display tonight!).... But when it dries up a bit I'll go out and check, as you described, to see if it's too deep.

Do you all find that this is a slow-grower? My Royal Standard, which is still in its pot but soon to get into the ground, has not grown as much as I would have expected either. I got it last year and it overwintered in the pot just fine. The pot seems full of roots, but the plant isn't as large as many others that I got last year.

Both of them get almost full, hot Kansas sun, lots of water. Maybe they need a little fertilizer.

Maybe I just need to be patient....

My royal standards are very fragrant and prolific (?). I have plants that are huge, but they’re bunches of clumps. It seems they sit on a huge rhizome, but I am not sure I have the terminology correct here.

You can see the open circle in the middle of the plant.

its a crown.. not a rhizome ...

and a dead center is called a fairy ring ...

you can dig out the center and remove the dead stuff and refill with soil ...

or break the whole clump up ... but it will not grow back into the dad stuff ...

some peeps used to use a sharpened bulb planter for such..
