Which colour do u like?

last modified: 7 years ago

We are about to replace garage doors. Here are 3 choices that we have narrowed it down to. Please help me decide. We know we will be going with coach style door with overlay, and clear glass windows. The colour is a tough decision.

1) driftwood (gray with wooden gain)

2)white

3) charcoal (darkest)

4)other - which?

Which would u pick? if anyone knows how to photoshop the driftwood sample over the exciting door, much appreciated.

Another pic of house

If those are your only choices, I'd go with driftwood. I think I might prefer a color closer to that of your stone, though, a little lighter and a little more brown.

The white doesn’t work. But the massive presence of the dark garage throws off the balance with the light-colored house. And there’s a black door that visually “bleeds” into the garage siding. For me, none of the garage door options work but I think it’s the dark garage siding throwing everything off.

If those were my only choices and I was looking strictly at the garage, ignoring the house, I would choose either the gray or the black. But with the house next to it...just none of it works for me. I feel like the siding needs to be painted.

At first glance I thought these were two completely separate buildings! Not a very cohesive look IMO. You may want to think about the singing color of the garage and then pick the color for the garage doors!

Just reverse of what Grover did upthread. I can’t do it as well I’m afraid!

Ha! I knew you would do it so much better Grover! Looks great!

I like that last one. needs some black lighting of some sort. The coach hardware will also jazz it up a bit. I would NOT do a white door. Driftwood or the charcoal is nice.

I like the lights over each door on this one.

the space above the door in the last pic is too empty/blah.

what about something like this, with the arbor above? But look at the garage door shape/windows and hardware.

    ditto this one:

I like this door and lighting.

Thank you everyone. However the siding needs to remain. Perhaps it’s hard to tell from photos, that colour is actually in the brick. We are building additional loft/garage, and it will be done in same stone and siding to match..and it’s already ordered and here. I honestly absolutely hate this matching, choosing...such as expensive, permanent decision...garage doors (4 of them) will be over $15 000.

4 garage doors for 15K ??? huh? what do they look like?

Why not just paint the current garage doors the same color as your siding, and get new ones in a similar style? If you have to get new ones, I would use the darkest gray. The driftwood introduces another texture on top of your siding, brick, and stone, which I think is too busy.

To clarify, that’s Canadian dollars. It’s Clopay, Coachman..price includes the track/mechanism etc...that’s the first quote we got...

The current door is original metal (25 years) old, dented and the track is rusted...only 1 opens

Ouch! That is hefty price. Cedar doors would look great.

Can’t get past what someone else mentioned, looks like two different houses. At least in the photos. Those door choices are pulling the two together

Some ideas. Might help unite the two structures.

The siding color may be present in your brick but not enough to make a difference! Your house reads mustard yellow and your garage reads charcoal and then there’s the added stone; another element. Not sure what the garage doors will look like but Hmmm, maybe you should paint the brick to match the siding.....

I do think taking the whole property into account is very important. I like the dark gray as a unifying color. BM Kendall Charcoal or BM Gentlemen’s Gray are two test.

    Looks great groveraxel

So once the new garage and loft are complete, the house will be the minority color. In this case, the house brick should likely be painted or stained to go with the new stone as in grover’s last rendering. It provides the most cohesive and coherent look. Then the garage doors will easily fit visually.

Love the driftwood and agree that you definitely need some backlighting. You'll be amazed by what a difference it makes.

thank you everyone. We did think about cedar door, and even brought home samples but it doesn’t look good. I do hate the brick, but so scared to paint it. We get very cold winters with a lot of snow..worried about paint chipping etc. I will be driving down to look at more colours. Thanks to you, I know white is out..and am curious how sandstone, ivory sample will look like (colour that may perhaps tie in the brick colour).

You don’t have to paint the brick but paint all your trim and garage doors a dark gray. It will tie the whole together and diminish the look of the brick which you don’t like. Your brick has a “total net impression” (the tone you see from 10’ away) of a sandy yellow. A dark gray is a great compliment to it. A cream or more yellow Hue Family color will be a big mistake IMO.

    I like the driftwood...

Stain the brick, not paint it. You've got to bring these 3 buildings into some kind of visual symmetry!

After seeing groveraxle's renditions I'm going to vote for charcoal.

I think that the driftwood color would look very nice!
