Does the barn door need to be the same style or could it be different? I would not do two side- by side....overkill in my opinion.

Also be prepared for the onslaught of barn door haters... their ears are burning right now....

Yes Molly I was thinking overkill as well. Can't post a pic as still under construction. I know there are barn door haters! And I agree that one can get carried away with the concept and I do NOT want to do that! The whole reason for thinking of barn door over laundry entry was need for space-saving. Not a need for the closet. I want the closet to be CLOSED, its a storage closet for vacuum etc.

I would probably do just one big barn door that covers both spaces. Looked and couldn't find an example of what I was talking about but I did find these -- big opening but TWO doors

We will often want them both closed at once. The double sliding (one over the other) was looked at, but my concern was how much it would stick out into the hallway (conclusion: too much)

A sliding barn door is just a sliding door styled like a barn door, but you can make ANY door a sliding door! Have you considered putting the same 5 panel door on sliding hardware?

Kirsten Eloise, yes and that is exactly what the plan is. My question was will it look ok for barn door to be side-by-side with the hinged door. I think it would be fine. Husband wants two barn doors, which I think is not necessary.

Ah, missed that part in the OP. I wouldn’t consider that a sliding BARN door (which I would agree might look mismatched), and I think a sliding door would look fine if it’s in the same style as the adjacent door. I make that distinction because so much of the barn door hate has to do with it not fitting the style of the house, when in reality it’s just a sliding door that can be any style!

You can use white hardware (or whatever color would match closest to your walls) to minimize the distinction or if you’re willing to spend a little more, artisan hardware sells a concealed hardware, so it would essentially look like a standard door sans the hinges (unless you wanted to add them for cohesion).

Thank you! yes, you are right, my terminology was wrong and I just learned to distinguish between sliding door and barn door! :)

A few more. I really think the half glass laundry door would flow best and not look like an afterthought.

Agree with Nidnay- the half glass one really lightens up the door. Like she says makes it intentional. If you have white trim and do a white panel door like your others I think it won’t look so heavy.

Just wanted to add that in this pic, they used the same style door but just painted it a different color which I think works well also.

I have a very small laundry room in from the kitchen. It use to have a swing door, which we took down. I would like the barn door, but the width is 35, is this area too small to hang one?
