Help with Kitchen Flush Mount light

6 years ago

Hi, we have just moved into a new house and are making some small updates.

One thing on on our list was to remove the kitchen box fluorescent light and do recessed lighting throughout.

We ran into an issue when going the recessed lighting route because the ceiling is plaster covered by drywall.

Because of this we we are just going to replace the light fixture itself with an updated LED light.

I would appreciate any specific recommendation. Would like something that puts out 3000+ lumens or so.

Here is one one that I found that may be an option: https://www.lampsplus.com/products/feiss-lennon-30-and-one-quarter-inch-wide-sunset-gold-ceiling-light__10f47.html

    How high are your ceilings?

  • 6 years ago

    I think they are 8.5’ or possibly 9’ at highest. I will confirm later

  • 6 years ago

    @NYCish They are roughly 8.5’, any advice would be appreciated!

    I like what you chose, but how much light do you need this flush mount to give you? A lot? More of nice general ambient light? At 8’5 you don’t have a ton of space to work with. But your choice is nice, won’t draw too much attention to your low-ish ceilings

    Wait for some pros to chime in;
    I’m no pro, just someone in the middle of a build and my kitchen level has low ceilings too :)

    I also like some of the flush mounts from tech lighting. A lot of them are really low profile. They won’t be “wow” but they give nice light. Your kitchen will be the wow and the flushmount will just light it well

    Could you do some flush or semi-flush mounts over your peninsula or is that a no go?

    My ceiling has drywall over plaster and I have recessed pot lights. It was not hard.

    It became cost prohibitive so we are just going the route of replacing the fixture

    Thank you girl wonder, the photo is actually the prior owners turnings and we are doing some updating. Sorry it was the only photo I had when posting

    @NYCish I came across this Tech Lighting. What do you think?

    Look at rejuvenation and see if you can find something longer or wider so you get more light. It's good you have under cabinet lighting but you still need more.

    I like that latest one posted - Vance. I don't know about dimensions but I think that one is nice and clean and stylish and elegant.

    @Mmbrown3 love it!!

    I almost purchased that one for our home. We ended up with the TL viaggio flush mount but I actually bookmarked that exact light for our family room!

    Tech lighting makes all thing beautiful in lighting, You could also introduce rail lighting if you wanted to move away from the single light source.

    Ok I did a little more searching and came across this fixture linked below.

    It's very low profile, wondering anyones thoughts comparing this to the Tech Lighting? I would get the 22" and the light output looks to be the same as the Tech Lighting

    I do still lean to the Tech Lighting Vance thinking it may look a little better but just wanted a little more feedback before ordering

    Prefer the second candidate to the first -- you don't really want cloth in a kitchen, where it will get grease and fumes.

    Another alternative would be to get a sort of track light system, so it would only need the one junction box, but could extend light to various task zones in the room.

    Some track systems can even include pendants!

    Yes, suggest looking further at tech lighting. They do cable systems and you can clip in a pendant to the cable. You can pretty design whatever you want with them. They make gorgeous pendants as well; my parents have a cable system of TL pendants in their transitional kitchen.

    Thank you for the suggestions!

    My wife does not like the look of the track lighting so for now we are just going to order a single light fixture. I think in that case we are going to opt for the Tech Lighting Vance.

    It seems to be the best option I have seen with good light output (3,500 Delivered Lumens).

    If anyone has any other suggestions please let me know

    Curious. Did you end up liking the light? We have a kitchen with one halogen pendant we want to replace vs putting in canned or track lighting and am trying to find a good option.
