I'm kinda thinking a volunteer seedling.?

You mean the no one has any idea kind? ......lol

Some of my volunteers look better than my cultivars, but it does have that kind of generic seedling look to it.

What does that mean exactly?

It does look like some seedlings i have also. Are there other hostas near it?

Thank you all very much. I don’t really understand the cultivation of hostas at all. So this is educational. So this means it is a plant that may have been used to grow a generic plant and it has never been tissue cultivated to make another more interesting plant? It will bloom so when it does will post the flower if it’s something special.

If you do not cut the scapes down and seeds develop you can get random seedlings. These would be open pollinated seedlings. I have plenty and some are quite interesting but most are rather blah.

Breeders take specific pollen from one Hosta and fertilize another desirable Hosta to get a deliberate cross. Then they grow the seedlings. If one or more shows promise they may send it to be tissue cultured.

Further explanation - some bulk growers don't really care if the hosta is labeled correctly or not. If they are selling to a big box store, they just have to have a plant, in a pot (or in my case, a box), that someone will buy. It doesn't really have to be what it is labeled as 90% of the buyers don't know the difference. In my case, it was my first hosta. I didn't know not to buy a hosta in a box from Holland, nor did I know they didn't do all that well in Texas.

Most hosta buyers are like me on those first hosta - they just don't know anything about them.
