Island here is 36-38" wide. Full cabinets on one side (24") and shallower cabinets on back (12-14"). In regards to working surface spacing - I can't be sure what this is. But typically I like to have 42" between surfaces, but will go as small as 36" if there is not an appliance or door that opens into the space. The range - if used a lot - may want to go up to 48"...but I find that 42" is ideal for everything. Keep in mind counter top overhangs when considering this space. I will usually go 42" between cabinets, so the overhang of the counter top makes it closer to 40" from surface to surface,
