Grow them in plastic covered frames or tunnels.

They are already growing in a garden.

Melons of any type are difficult to grow west of the Cascades. Even in the best of summers it is not hot enough for these vines to be very productive. Poly tunnels are recommended as well as selecting early to ripen, short season varieties.

There is not much one can do to make up for lack of heat. Our climate is what it is :-)

So, to make these vines more productive, could I just leave one or two baby melons on each vine, and pinch off every remaining flower?

That won't make the vines any more productive.......but it can enhance the chances of the melons developing properly and actually ripening to maturity. It is recommended that you pinch off the vines just beyond the fruit set so that the vine's energy is focused on the fruit itself.
