Plain and simple, those 2 plants showing shoots with blue leaves are sporting/reverting, probably reverting to 'Halcyon'. If you have no interest in the blue-leaved shoots just remove them from the crown through division. If they show decent roots you might want to plant them out and grow them on, 'Halcyon' is a nice variety.

Pieter is so right. I have one of my June that decided to revert back a couple shoots back to Halcyon too. So far it is way too big to separate the plants but I am sure next spring would be much easier

i might stand corrected.. but halcyon was one of eric smith tardiana group .. where he crossed a late reblooming elegans.. with a small green plant .... to create a new line of smaller blues .;.. this was state of the art hybridizing in the early 1960s ... herb benedict took some of them out to the 5th generation... or something like that ...

Thanks Ken .....you always are a good teacher. We’re you or are you an eduactor? I imagine a professor of horticulture and arborist ——- I was an educator myself and have noticed the opportunity to impart knowledge stays with me Even as a retiree.

For the last four years or so, I have had to annually separate the blue sports from my various Junes, this year being no exception. The blue is gaining in size and growing nicely. I believe Jerry/olddirt has the same issue but cant remember if he saved his blues or twisted them off.

This is a beautiful blue hosta. I do want to Separate out the blue leaves and plant them as you have. Never tried this before so I hope it works! :-)

There is a home not far from me that has a semi circle around a tree with 4 Junes. The hosta have been there for many many years. They remain pretty much the same size (tree root competition?). I've always wanted to speak to the owners and let them know that the hosta June can actually be so much larger. But maybe they like them that way? Now all 4 Junes are reverting. I think it looks rather nice except for the fact that the blue will eventually take over the plant. Every time I see them I wonder whether they would like to know about the reversion. If they were outside, I would approach them. But I've never caught them outside. Then I wonder---leave them a note in their mailbox? And then I forget about it and get reminded as I drive by their house.

If they aren’t “outdoor” they may not have noticed even. Approaching people you don’t know is always a dilemma. They might welcome the information, like me, they may find it interesting and not really care, or they may be very interested and wondering just how you go about rearranging the situation....ah, meaning they may ask for your help. Or, maybe they like the reversion to halcyon...... the choice is in your hands! Let me know what you decide to do! :-)
