Kitchen/dining room area

last modified: 7 years ago

I have a 1940s cottage style home. i love the house- except the kitchen/dining setup isn’t my favorite. I can’t get the dining part to look great. I originally thought I’d put a round table to break things up a bit but the fridge door being there doesn’t allow for it. Any suggestions for what I could do in this area?

    They should be up?

Yes, I see them now. Can you live without the hutch that's in the corner? Consider a 42" round table such as the walnut and glass one that West Elm offers. Then get 4 chairs that are not humongous and place them on an angle around the table instead of squared off with the walls.

I'll find a houzz photo to show you what I mean. Your bar area looks nice, and while I like the draperies, they seem to interfere with traffic, so think about using them elsewhere.

Here's the promised photo that shows how I suggest you arrange your chairs around a round table.. This arrangement usually allows for more walking space between walls and table.

    Table should have been round

Area rug is just not needed

    Tree is too big

    China Cabinet is to small

Light fixture get lost in front of the brick wall

As I mentioned, I’d love a round table but it just won’t work with with fridge door. And I have 4 kids and host guests a bit so I need More than 4 chairs.

    What about an oval table?

Can you turn the table and have it centered on the window?

If not then leave the table and concentrate on the back wall.

Can you build in a bench on far wall, reorient the table (does being at the far end make it clear of the fridge?) and make it into banquet seating? The photos make perspective a bit off.

I can try turning table and see how that would look. I agree the cabinet isn’t right there. I just had that already and put it there while I figure things out. I was thinking a buffet against back wall... there just isn’t too much room. I could move table some.. would have to move light fixture as well- not a huge deal

It seems if I put table against brick wall with bench, there would be a big gap between counter and table. Would that look strange?

I don’t really like those chairs on the end- so I could replace them with smaller chairs - or just have chairs set aside for ends when we have guests

Adding an oval table to break up the harsh angles would be an awesome addition. Also, there is a great opportunity to play with textures on the back wall with a Gallery.

What about bench seating? I think that this would open up the room for you.

I don’t think your dining area will ever feel like a formal dining room unless you can move the refrigerator out of the room. Then I would add either two narrow (3’?) wall sections or two ceiling-hung drapery panels to suggest separation between the kitchen and dining room. Is there a service porch where you could move the fridge?
If this were my house and I had the money, I would add an extension to the kitchen for the refrigerator and a pantry.

    Try it on the diagonal...

Pardon my ignorance, but what is a service porch? There’s a laundry combined butlers pantry next to it... but there’s no way the husband will let me rework where fridge is - haha. I’m just going to have to work with what I have. If it stays funky, at least the rest of the house is cute!!

A “service porch” is what they used to call a laundry room. It would have had a sink , maybe the water heater and often a refrigerator....service items. Now I feel OLD.
