I've been pretty fortunate. I've noticed the only one I really have trouble with in pots are the Guacamole family, which includes Stained Glass. I do well with the Halcyon family, Undulata Albomarginata, Fire Island, etc.

is it that you have trouble with the fragrant ones???

it doesnt surprise me.. that it might be late.. being a warm climate fragrant hosta ... maybe you know what i mean .... the coffee buzz is infringing on clarity right now ....

I'm surprised. The fragrants do best for me. Except for the great root rot that killed nearly everything, I don't remember losing any fragrants except plantaginea and Venus. Of course, I'm in zone 8. Try Paul's Glory. It has a similar look (only better) and it did well for me in a pot.

yes.. i am wondering if the fragrant are harder to winter over ... cold wet media on a family that tends to be a hot season plant ...

i dont know enough pot theory to know the answer ... hence wondering if she has had trouble with other fragrants ...

I have 2 hosta varieties that I describe as prolific - Stained Glass and Paul's Glory. Prolific as in growth. I started with one (not large) of each about 7 years ago and now have 7-9 of each from frequent dividing. I give them away now. PG may be described as a medium size but give him room to grow because that he will do that! SG is the most under-rated hosta - he will brighten up any corner you put him in.

I try to stay away from Guacamole and Stained Glass. I don't want to get too attached!! But. They're so pretty. I've tried everything to be them both back the next season with no luck. Last season I kind of left Stained Glass alone. I didn't hold much hope. When I saw pips, I was ecstatic!! But. It did take a super long time for them to actually unfurl and grow. It can't be a good sign?

If pots aren't working why keep them in pots? In my climate the most effective way to kill a hosta is leave it outside in a pot over winter. The freeze thaw cycles rot the roots. Tiny pips will comeback from rotting roots but not to survive long.

The fragrants like the heat and sun. Trying giving them more sun in the spring and maybe they'll do better for you.
