Combining laundry and mud rooms - a good idea?

After demoing our laundry (11ft x 6ft) and mudroom (5ft x 6ft), we are contemplating eliminating the wall that separates them to combine and make a larger more functional room.

Issues:
1. The current laundry room only has one vent, as a result I am unsure if this is sufficient to heat the larger room. Also, please note that this is an open staircase that goes down to the basement from the mud room.
2. The garage door is too close to the wall to allow for a proper closet or shelving for footwear.

To make the larger room more functional, I believe the door to the garage needs to be moved approximately 8" away from the wall.

This would be an opportune time to make the change as the room is being completely overhauled. Is this worth the effort and extra cost?
