i tend to agree .... one of the ten foot rule hosta ....

I thought about taping it up, but the petioles are quite stout.

Do you think taping them up is a bad idea in 90 degree weather? I have some others I have moved this weekend that I should do that to but opted not to.

I do a lot with woody trees and shrubs and keeping them tied up for more than a few hours or a day at the most is a no-no in the summer.

Oftentimes, when a hosta has been moved (or shipped bare-root), it loses some of it's moisture. If it falls over (wilts) from that lack of moisture, it will stay that way for the season. If you tape the petioles with painters tape for a couple of weeks, they will stay upright. Given it's August, maybe it makes very little difference as it's probably not that long until first frost in zone 3.

Now, two questions:

1. What difference does 90 degree weather have to do with taping or not taping?

2. How does how you treat woody plants have to do with hosta (they aren't woody).

(I'm just curious about your thinking.)

the word is turgid.. as in turgidity ... someone in this forum once described it as the opposite of flaccid.. if you get her drift.... ;O

when severed from the mother plant.. and perhaps a lot of roots cut off.. the plant losses water pressure.. turgidity ... and once a leaf flops ... especially a larger one.. it will never have the internal pressure to make that leaf and stalk.. stand back up ...

so... we tape them up ... for a few weeks ... in fact.. until the tape falls off on its own ... until the roots recover.. sufficient to pump enough water so leaves quit falling down ...

temperature has nothing to do with it.. its internal water pressure ... though of course.. heat and water use do fit in the overall equation ....

i have used the tape and rope methods on trees.. conifers..shrubs.. you name it.. but usually in that case.. its to bind up the plant.. so i can get under there to dig properly ... as well as move it around after digging ...
