I believe that even temperatures that are too hot will prevent tomatoes from ripening. Though if the temps are hot, you likely won't have any tomatoes to ripen!

to further complicate the question - I had two tomatoes ripen on a Moskvitch tomato. None of the others on the plant show any signs of ripening just maybe looking whitish green instead of light green. Plant is in a high tunnel with sides rolled up. Daytime temps 100 under the plastic but night time is just as cool as outside - so 50s and recently 60s. We've had some nights as cool as 40s here in NH.

I think another thing to keep in mind is that the red pigments (lycopene and carotene) that appear in a normal ripe tomato can't form at high or low temps. So the tomato may ripen (flavor- and texture-wise), but may not get red. I think they might just turn whitish or yellowish. So if you're waiting forever for your cold tomatoes to turn red, they just might not.

There is cold and then there is cold :-)) We never have very hot daytime weather here and nights are always cool - 50's and 60's are routine regardless of daytime heat. As an example, home air conditioning is virtually unheard of in this region. And yet we still manage to grow a decent crop of tomatoes!! I have been harvesting Sungolds since early this month.

I used to live in Portland, and the mean low temp there in July and August is about 60F. As noted in the link above, ripening is inhibited with nighttime temperatures below 50F. Happy red tomatoes.

SC is on the other end in July. Hot and Humid heat index is usually around 100 this time of the year. Nightly lows average 71, so tomatoes don't do well until we cool down in lat Aug/ Early Sept, but that gives us two good seasons. May/June and around Sept.
