How do night temps affect ripening?

I have a lot of green tomatoes, the fruit set began at least a solid month ago, if not closer to 6 weeks (I used those wall-o-water thingies on some of them), but they are just refusing to ripen; most of them aren't even blushing yet. The only thing I can think of is the night temps have been cool pretty much all summer -- I'm talking low 50s cool some early mornings IN JULY! We've had very few warm nights this year. Could this be the problem? I have cocktail, cherry, and large size -- none of them are ripening, and I've grown the Sweet 100s cherries for as long as I can remember, so not new to me.
