I planted Jayne this spring bareroot from Hortico. I had to chose between Jayne or Charles Austin. I know they say she can get quite tall but I'm not sure I believe that at least not here. But she's only been in the ground a couple of months as the Hortico order was shipped rather late so she's had to suffer the intense heat. When the order arrived my husband informed me that I couldn't put any rose in the spot I intended for her as he will need to put up the ladder once or twice a year to clean the chimney. Never thought of that when I was overordering! Anyway I had to push her closer together with Tess. There was supposed to be another rose between them. Tess was a substitute and I don't like the idea of red and yellow together so I may have to move Jayne next spring. So far Jayne has not been anxious to grow rapidly and the blooms are very pale. She is showing some spot maladies and that could be cercospora rather than BS. I think Paul Barden really liked this rose so I am hoping she has a better next year.

I'm glad to hear someone has her, expecially you as we seem to share a similar BS pressure! Do you have yours in a full sun position? Her colour seems a bit softer, but I don't know how else they differ. I'm feeling you on the red next to bright yellow, but hopefully it won't be too bad as Tess is an unusual red veering into pink for me. I don't think you'll end up with ketchup and mustard! ;0

Mine was just struck recently, but seems to be a vigorous grower. Still, it's unlikely she'll be ready to plant before next summer so hopefully a few more folks will pipe in between now and then! ))

Here is an old image from my rose garden in Ontario, zone 4b. Jayne Austin has always been a favorite of mine. She has a very potent, and to my nose, wonderful Tea rose fragrance. I used to think of her as the cold zone Noisette.

I first saw her in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia, zone 8, many years ago. She was being grown on a tall fence as a pillar and was absolutely stunning. She was about 7 feet tall on that fence. I have grown her ever since. She was released by David Austin Roses in 1990 and they still offer her for sale. That in itself speaks to her quality.

She is an extremely healthy variety, I have never seen any disease on her in any garden where she is grown. She is also a very good repeat bloomer. Not much negative to say about this rose in my view.

In Ontario, with winter protection, she grew as a very shrubby plant, lots of basal canes to about 3 feet tall and wide after winter die back to a few inches. I don't know how she would do in a zone 6 garden, but I am pretty sure she will survive. She has both Rugosa and Gallica in her breeding, not too many generations back.

I can't thank you enough for your comment and link. I always forget to check PD's site and remember he really liked this rose! Do you think her canes could be trained to go at all horizontal? In any case, I think I've decided to plant her next to my fence and try. It's a taller fence so it won't need much training. Can't wait till she gets bigger. I wonder why she is not more widely grown? OT, if you grow The Prince, can you see them both in the same bed divided by a lighter coloured rose, or is TP too red? I'm desperate to find homes for all my rose orphans! LOL! : ))
