Strange thought, probably not worthwhile - garlic roots

Has anyone ever tried planting garlic roots and seeing if it will create a bulb? I'm thinking about putting my garlic in the ground soon, and this year I have an entire root section that survived intact attached to the remains of the hardneck stalk. No bulbs on it at all, just the entire root section and the dry stalk. I can't imagine that it would produce bulbs for next year, but I also can't help but wonder if anyone has ever tried it.
