The husks split open and are pretty easy to take off, once they dry out - almost like pistachio shells, tho they look more like walnuts.

It's the shells that are hard. But the nutmeats pop out in one piece, once they've had a chance to dry too.

Haha - no. I have no room for another tree in my yard, unfortunately - or maybe fortunately?

And I would guess it was about 7-8 years, if not more, before it fruited.

FWIW, I was just discussing with hubby that I seem to recall I paid only $5 for the seedling at Green Thumb Festival.

Carol, I have only seen them for sale over here twice and both times they were $50. I was going to get one but was quickly informed that I could not have nut trees by wife. Was going to have peacons too. Can't always have what you want. Congrats on the harvest.

Carol, I am running out of room but she doesn't want nut trees because they will make to many and she fears that they will be all over the yard. A problem that doesn't bother me but bothers her to no end.

Hmm, I live on a barrier island and we have squirrels, possums, raccoons, bobcats, panthers, and big nasty lizards. Used to have bears, too, but that was before my time.

That's interesting - how long is the bridge to your island, writersblock? Are there shallows that animals might ford? Are there wild areas where they could hide? Ours are completely developed here.
