Cat litter mat.

I don’t usually check out Facebook ads, but this one looked intriguing. It’s a cat litter mat, but the litter goes through a top grid surface to collect on a pad below, then you can just pour that into the trash (or back into the litter box).

I haven’t tried many litter mats, most of them look like they are no better than a rug. Has anyone tried The FuturePaws litter mat?

    I have this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00G67FD6W/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Works great. I "empty" it once a week. I'm going to order a second one to create a bigger area around the box. Our youngest cat is litter flinger.

I wonder if cats mind stepping on it (though they don’t seem to mind stepping on the stray litter on the floor!) or if they will leap over it as they exit the box?

One of the reviewers questioned the same thing, but said her cats actually love to roll around on it. Weirdos.

One complaint said “I still have to sweep the floor every other day.” Seriously?

Hmm, looks like this is FuturePaws only product? But there are similar/identical on Amazon for less (and I’m Prime but don’t use it much). And most have the same great reviews. And I sure do like to see an address or phone number, I’m so old school.

Interesting - fortunately we have space in our unfinished basement for the litter boxes but it would still be nice if the litter didn’t get tracked outside of that area. I’ll have to take a closer look at the reviews on Amazon.

It is interesting, but it seems very small at 21x27. In several of the review photos it looks like people may have multiple, and in a couple it actually looks like maybe they joined them together.

I have a similar one that works fairly well. There are still some that end up outside it. But it is the best one I’ve tried so far. Easy to care for too.

If only litter were the only thing that ended up outside the box...

I just use a tub mat and shake it out back into the box and sweep up daily...especially after Mila who likes to 'excavate' in the box.

The one on amazon is under $20 and is larger than the one in the OP.

I've actually got a Waterhog mat in front of one of our boxes. It traps the litter in the little indentations fairly well, but I swear that stuff still sprouts wings and flies all over creation.

I have a little OXO whisk broom and dustpan close to the two side-by-side jumbo litter boxes my cats use. Every time I scoop, I sweep up the crumbs. I'd give a better protective mat a try. However, the other day I found a few pieces of litter on my night stand, So it does travel a distance between toes.

Hmmmm. Cleaning. I like the idea but there are times our one cat goes outside the box. (Of course it’s the 23lb. one with 23 lbs. of pee. )Then there’s a lovely mess underneath. After a few times of that I started putting puppy pads which helps tremendously if there’s a miss. It’s certainly not pretty to look at though. Back to cleaning, they’re showing you can hose it off. I’d scrub It too. Do you towel dry the whole thing off? If is a hot day you might be able to hang it outside. Sounds like it eliminates some of the pain but could add more of a pain elsewhere. It’s one of those products I’d have to try I think to decide if it was worth having.

That said, my litter is off to the side in my laundry room. If it were in a more public place I believe I would have bought one of these already.

For cleaning, I guess it’s like cleaning the litterbox: regularly, fast, and dry it as fast as you can to get it all back in place.

For our house, one issue is not the cats tracking the litter so much but the fact that the box is on a tile floor, off the laundry room, and the litter spreads easily and gets moved along by people feet, too. I can’t tell you how often I can sweep or vacuum or both and still find that a couple of grains just got pushed or blown somewhere else. It doesn’t take much. This sounds like it will really help with that problem.

Since the box is in a room we use, I wonder if the mat grid will tolerate to 170# of adult weight stepping on it from time to time?

I think I will order one of the amazon ones, in a large size. I’ll keep you posted!

bpath, is this the one you're going to order from Amazon? The price looks good and the XL would be just the right size. I have a removable mat there, but the litter just sits on the top.

For years my Bessie was a litter box roller, esp right after I filled it with fresh litter, but not always when it was fresh. She seems to have finally outgrown it...it took years.

Bunny, yes I think that’s the one I’ll order.

I’m worried they will just jump over the mat! I think I’ll start with it further out than they can leap, so they have no choice. It doesn’t seem to bother them when I add or remove small rugs in there, so hopefully they will adapt easily.

Hmm, for “suggested products” there is a Litter Genie, supposedly like Diaper Genie. Am I missing something? How is this better than my small Simple Human step-on lidded trash can, lined with a trash bag (actually a grocery sack)?

bpath, I think cats are much more adaptable than they would like us to believe.

We have a Litter Champ. Ours is the cream colored one but could only find taupe on here.

I chose that over the Genie because of the larger capacity but I also like the looks better. The foot pedal opens the top but there’s another lid that doesn’t open until you push down the top. I think it keeps the smell in well. We’ve used the bags for the Litter Champ but I’ve also used a 13 ga. garbage bag with a rubber band to hold to to the round plastic thing inside. Hard to explain but works just as well.

Little girl is a "high pee-er" and although we got higher sided boxes, she still manages to get it outside the box opening. We need a lower opening because of our other kitty and his limited mobility. So, this mat works pretty well. I also bought a hard plastic dog crate liner to put under the other litter box, so that also works well. It was also fairly inexpensive.

I also have an iprimio one that I bought on Amazon, It's open on 3 sides, so I picked that version on the assumption it would be easier to clean the inside. My cats are intense and thorough diggers, but it at least catches some of the litter. They don't always exit out the side with the mat, but they don't avoid it either

I use a vinyl tablecloth folded in to an appx. 2' X 3' rectangle and place the litter box on top of it. I can pick it up and shake any thrown out litter back into the pan. However, it doesn't "trap" the pieces of litter. There is still some that gets on the floor or the small rug in front of the sink. I'll be interested to hear how the OP and Bunny's mats work out. Be sure to post back.

First update: delivery! I could become addicted to Amazon Prime. The mat is darker than I expected. I thought I ordered Light Grey, and it was hard to tell from the website and my order confirmation what I’d actually ordered. There was no shipping insert with the box. I finally figured out that the grey has a navy border, and mine definitely doesn’t have that, so it must be the light grey. It’s going in a half-bath off the laundry room, so it’s not like it will be seen much.

It comes folded twice so per instructions it is being flattened out under a couple of full laundry baskets (excuse not to do laundry!) for a day.

I did not expect it to be open on TWO ends. Just have to remember to lift it from both ends.

I just watched their video on Amazon, and they show a brief moment of using it as a doormat. Great idea if it holds up. We have a doormat just outside our door to the garage that is “flow-through” and it’s amazing what we sweep from underneath when we clean the garage. It also lets snow etc fall through from shoes without getting the mat wet, which would defeat the purpose of the mat. (we also find our boot trays work better with a bit of ventilated shelving inside, which helps keep the boots from sitting in snowmelt and helps the soles dry faster.)

Second update: my new best friend. This works exactly as advertised.

I have a Large size and it extends out from under the box enough that the cats don’t jump over it. I haven’t seen them step on it (they are very secretive and if you even walk past the door while they are in there, they skedaddle).

But, there is so little litter being tracked, I’m tempted not to sweep at all! Instead of sweeping 3x a day, I’ve swept once in two days. Perhaps the litter I’m seeing is only what I dropped when I scooped the box. I moved the little lidded dedicated trashcan over to on top of the mat, so that should help.

Because it is in rather tight quarters, I have to figure out the best way to lift it so as not to spill the litter, but I think I’ll be able to work that out.

So far, soooooo good! I just wish the light grey were actually light grey.

I'm sold, bpath. Thanks for taking the plunge and taking the time to write a review. I think I'll go with an XL. I wish they had light gray but it will be next to two poop/pee boxes, so aesthetics are at a low premium anyway.

I think I’d like to have had 35” long, but it’s 2” narrower and I wanted the width. As it is, I don’t have it all the way under the box so that there is more width to step on. Also, I have the box in a corner, so there is mat on only 2 sides.

oh, also note, I did not get the mid-open, I don’t think I understand that one.

Hmm, maybe the beige would have been a good color choice. Oh well, it’s not on public view!

bpath, did you get the Black Hole or WePet mat? The latter has various colors and sizes available. I really need 35" in length and a narrower width.

    WePet.

    last modified: 7 years ago

Yeah, I'm wondering that too - Black Hole or WePet? At first I thought they were the same mat, but not so.

ETA: you answered just as I was posting. thanks bpath

bpath, thanks. Since I have two jumbo boxes side by side, I need the extra length of the XL. Off to place my order.

    last modified: 7 years ago

Gee, I hadn’t looked at the Black Hole. It looks like it might be more comfortable to step on? Prettier border, too! But they don’t seem to mind the WePet.

Bunny, let us know how you like it.

We have one cat who sticks her butt out of the kitty litter box when peeing. As a consequence we now have a kitty litter container within a box that has kitty litter in it. The outer one is the high-sided one. No pee on the floor anymore.

I highly dislike the kitty litter on the floor and haven't come up with a good solution for that. Both cats carry their kitty litter in their paws far and wide. :-(. We sweep daily and carry the kitty litter garbage container out frequently.

Yeonassky, you have a good solution. When I had a similar cat, I put the litter box in an unused shower. Easy clean up.

This mat may solve your litter tracking, it seems to really have helped mine a lot!
