Increase frequency. I have that issue. But its only an issue in summer. Helped a lot of my plants make it through the winter(and most are medium difficulty, or easy with winter dormancy needed).

Living up here I use an inorganic mix to prevent winter rot. But I also have root rot in too slow a draining mix during the summer. My inorganic mix pumice and chicken grit gets damp when watering and the plants do well. I personally think that soil mixes and climate go hand in hand.
