I wouldn't paint it black, as the only other black thing in the room seems to be the cat, who won't stay put. But I think a drum shade (white) would tie in better with your other furnishings than the existing shade.

Can you spray paint it to match some of the other metal finishes in the room?

Brass is back "in" - new, updated shades would look great.

The handles on the nightstands and dresser are a low gloss black and the starburst is matte black.

Well then a matte black might work just fine! There are some neat shades out there that would give the lamps a bit of wow.
