Before I got to your second paragraph, I was going to suggest inverse fuel routing. ~3 years ago loger had a link to a very clear video on routing diagnosis. I couldn't find that one but loger also linked to THIS one a few years earlier. I didn't check to see if it was as clear.

If you have a primer bulb not directly mounted to carb, then textually I can say that the bulb PULLS fuel through the carb. and shoots that fuel back into the tank above the liquid level area. Therefore, the fuel line with filter sitting in tank connects to one of carb ports (if you guess wrong the primer bulb won't pull fuel) and the other carb port connects to the sucking end of primer bulb while output of bulb goes back to top of tank. Connect spare fuel lines on to carb and bulb into some fuel for testing. You can easily check bulb to see which side sucks.
