I have a smaller version of Brother Stefan that looks like yours! I purchased it this year when it was just pips. So I was surprised to see the green leaves emerge, and of course, the green leaves are trying to crowd out the real Brother Stefan. I will be separating it soon. I never heard that the plant should not revert.

I have two Junes reverting to Halcyon so I plan to lift the plants remove the blue leaves with their roots and plant them to get a Halcyon as a new plant. If yours is reverting what is it reverting to?

Since I have not separated my plant, I can see that the green leaves have grown much more than the real Brother Stefan leaves (just as Ken says). Best to separate ASAP!

I cannot thank the above contributors enough for their help! Yes, I will remove the green portions right away. It makes sense that the green is more aggressive because the leaves are all green. I can use them to make a new plant now known as "Step Brother". Thank you!!

by asap.. anytime in the next week or so ....tape the two parts separately ... dig it all up.. hose off all the soil ... hope fully it will easily break apart ... if not.. cut it ... if cut.. let it dry before you replant .... the cut.. not the roots... cover with damp towel or some such ....

One last question from me. I read from an "expert" that the best time to divide and transplant hostas (which is what I will be doing with my Brother Stefan) is late August to early September. Is there agreement--or not--on this? (I hope I don't stir up a hornet's nest here.)_

Depends where you live. It’s still radically hot here September.

Yes, I agree. Also agree with kathy that it depends on your zone. So, for my zone, that's a great time to divide and transplant. That is because the hot weather is over, the soil is still warm and the plants have time to settle in and root themselves before the first frost.

I appreciate all of the above sage advice (that's not a pun). I am in Overland Park, KS, part of the Kansas City metro area. I used to be zone 5b but a number of years ago they moved us to zone 6a. I will split off the sport from Brother Stefan tomorrow when it's 85 degrees (it's going to be 97 today) but for my other hostas that need moving I will hold off until it's cooler, but in time for them to get settled in before winter. You all hit on exactly the conditions I was anticipating. Thanks again.

Here is the result after I split Brother Stefan and the sport (?Stepbrother). I was able to get four good plants for each variety. I put them side by side but my spacing isn't ideal because I was in a hurry. I think it will look good next spring when they come and fill out better. This is a bed that is new and is still in progress. I certainly hope Ken will approve of my efforts.(lol)
