It's a ubiquitous landscaping plant in coastal SoCal.

I knew it was popular in California. I got mine in a trade with a californian but it did not like Texas. Too Hot , not enough water at my house, not enough top soil, too alkaline.

Last time I looked, the name was changed to Cistanthe grandiflora. Nice plant, but as with Polygala, I have difficulty integrating that flower color into my landscape.

Gyr_falcon is mostly right. The plant in cultivation here is Cistanthe grandiflora. It was originally thought to be Calandrina, which is a valid taxa, but it is not in cultivation.

I also find the color a bit strident, but pair it with bicolor geraniums of similar hues to tame it.

That could help, iochroma, if my lot wasn't so small that my visual garden zones are this side of the house, and the opposite side of the house. ;-)

I like strident tones. Texas light is so strong and my dirt is white or light orange in many places in the sun. many subtle colors get blasted into non existence.
