yes you are correct. If I white wash the brick we will most likely paint the cabinets to the right another color - blue/grey or something else so it doesn't clash with the brick

With the firebox that high above the floor, a mantel will be too high, IMO. Hang a large piece of art in the empty space to the right instead. I'm talking "really" big as below.

A neighbor of ours painted their fireplace white and what difference it made in the room. It was beautiful.. I would paint all of it white and place a few tall things in front of the big brick wall. Or place a nice chair and floor lamp. You’ll be surprised how much light it will throw out into the room..

Our daughter has a fireplace somewhat like yours. They have a mantel and it looks great..

they have a ledge much like yours and we all love sitting in front of the fire in the winter..

The colors of the brick are so varied that I think one color would look better.
Do you use the fireplace and the wood niche? If the fireplace works nicely, the white-painted brick would perhaps stay clean. I would put a large wooden cabinet to the right of the fireplace. I’m just concerned that the “white” may be too bright.
What is the height from the floor to the top of the fireplace trim brick? The measurement from the floor to the bottom of my thick mantel is 57” and it looks very good.

Would not whitewash the brick. Try bleaching it instead, especially needed where it is darker above the firebox opening.

Would not want a mantel but you could create a wall over the brick with boards and paneling or just add a really large piece of art centered both vertically and between the fireplace opening and the right side of the brick.

Instead of investing in expensive art, create your own by painting some smooth sanded finishing plywood?

Use a solid black heat resistant paint ...

paint two pieces of plywood to create mirror images of the existing fireplace opening and log niche.

Create "steps" to hang on the brick wall leading from hearth to ceiling.

Or use heat resistant silver colored paint to ..

Park the silhouette of a car or boat or aircraft on your hearth.

On that HGTV show Restoration they came upon a white washed fireplace. He wanted to return it to it's beginning. They fretted over the chemicals it could take, how nasty the removal would become. When they got going they found the white wash never adhered to the brick and with a brush and water and a lot of elbow grease it came off rather "easily". If you move forward I would suggest looking into products that are water soluble. The next owner will no doubt prefer the natural look.

I see evidence on the brick and ceiling above the fireplace that this is a smokey fireplace. If you intend to use it, I would not whitewash or paint it.

Problem with fireplaces is that they create a giant hole in your home for conditioned air to escape. Fitting them with glass doors helps somewhat but this one looks like it would be a custom job and expensive.

I’d white wash it. Groveraxle’s renditions look good to me. Before you redo it, make sure to get the whole fireplace and flue cleaned and checked out. Then consider art work on the right side and new colors for the cabinets.

Yes, but not whitewash , I would paint it white or black or charcoal ( look at HOUZZ for inspiration ) and the cabinet next to it needs to be painted white , same as the walls .. And other doors ...once you decide on the color of the brick wall you can decorate the wall for a mirror , a painting ...seating ...a bench ...book shelves , a lamp and make sitting around your beautiful fireplace a pleasure on a cold winter night . Narrow rooms benefit from mirrors ..see what you need in your space ...what you want to accomplish ..if you like it to look bright ..paint white ...! then enjoy .

This is definitely overwhelming though I didn’t like the whitewash photo any better. Thanks Groveraxle for for the visual. I don’t know your budget but I would add the mantel you dream of as well as a hearth to break up the front (definitely not in brick). I would cover the large expanse of brick to the right with either Sheetrock or panels to match the other wood work in the house. I have zero photoshop skills to show what this might look like as can’t find a good photo to show it.

It looks like a feature that will introduce character into your space. I whitewashed the brick fireplace in our family room, and I never liked it. It took on a different color than I anticipated, and actually became an obstacle for decorating. When we remodeled, I ended up painting it the same as the trim in that room...a soft, warm white. I am very happy with the fireplace look now! Definitely check out Jenny Komenda’s tutorial on mineral paints for brick. If I had to do it all over again...would have saved a ton of time!

Maybe our magician Groveraxle will Show you a painted version. The advantage of paint is if it gets soot on it, you can touch it up. I painted a brick fireplace in my first colonial and it was super easy to keep fresh looking. I like the idea of the brick and everything on that wall one solid color.

So now that i have seen Groveraxle's picture of it whitewashed I don't think it looks any better. Grover axle seems to have some great ideas. Any chance they are still on thread ad could give me some ideas now on what to do? PLEASE?? haha
