The ceiling is the first thing I would have to fix.

The wood goes with the era of the house. I'd leave it. New, lighter carpet and a few modern sconces to provide soft, diffuse light would help a lot.

You need lighting and I would suggest LEDs in 4000K The floor would be the first thing I would change it was not original and by the looks of it the cheap HD stuff that was done .What is in that step up? That is where a nice coat closet should go and maybe with white doors to break up all the wood since the wood on that back wall does not look the same as the rest. Then strip all the rest of the wood and do in a clear finish

Is the carpeted area the start of a staircase outside the photo?

Do you have a ceiling light fixture?

What geographical area are you in, roughly? Climate makes a difference for entryway appearance and furnishings.

I would change the ceiling fixture to a brighter one with LEDs. The wood panelling and flooring are both very nice. If you need a match to the parquet flooring, you may be able to remove some from a closet to patch the planter area by the stairs.
