Layout Mudroom/Kitchen

We are trying to agree upon a layout for our mudroom/laundry room/kitchen...My spouse wants the entry closest to the garage door open so that we can easily drop groceries into the pantry or kitchen...I think we should close that entry off and leave the other entry open so that traffic doesn’t flow from the garage entrance directly to the kitchen (in front of the stove). Neither option is ideal...We could also leave both entrances open but I think it would be noisy? Can you see any other option?

Do you have an actul kitchen designer or are you letting your arhitect design this space? If it is an actual KD then you need a new one the pantry is way too far out of the work space a fridge in a corner is never good the walk from the garage to the kitchen is just plain bad IMO you need to redesign this whole area the laundry in the furthest corner is also bad design .If you have kids I will tell you they willnot hang their stuff in the closet I like a locker for each child with boot storage with the benches the lockers can even be open to make use easier This idea is a good one for all the stuff that seems to end up in a mud room Since this space is mostly used by the familt keep it useable not just attractive. I prefer true pullou pantries to walkins the storge is where it is needed you can arrange them in whatever way works for how you cook they are great in a wall with the fridge. The pantries hold tons of stuff at your finger tips and you can also do under the counter ones for oils and stuff. When I say true pullouts I mean like this not cupboard doors with pull out shelves behing doors that just makes them hard to use

We originally had our walk-in pantry open on 2 sides (garage entry that opened into what was mudroom/laundry/pantry one long area) but we closed off the pantry opening so we can only get to it from the kitchen. I didn't want traffic walking through the pantry from the garage and like that it will be separate, similar to what a pantry cabinet would be.

I’d be worried about some of the doors, although I’m not certain what’s a back door and what’s a front.

I can’t tell what plan version is your current one.

One door from outside, has the incoming facing a hallway.

At one point, 3 doors converge.

The laundry room is on the “view” side of the house?

The pantry is almost half the size of the kitchen? Depending on which design is relevant, make a bigger kitchen and use Patricia’s pullouts.

Or are those big parallel vertical boxes on the last drawing a kind of island pantry? You’d easily meet your Fitbit step goal if you have to set up a family meal. Maybe a “slouch couch” would work right there, so family could just plonk there at the end of the day. Maybe a homework table where you can answer curiosity questions, spend quality time with kids while you’re in the kitchen, and oversee that books are getting opened and math getting done, no online browsing...? Re-imagine that space later when the kids are older.

Just a thought....might you want a guest suite on the first floor for parents et al? A dedicated entrance for the office if clients come there? (This used to be a signifier of a home office claim on taxes. Maybe not any more?)

Make sure traffic is forced THROUGH the mudroom. In one of your options, it is not; in this case, nobody’s dropping his stuff in the mudroom.

What if we moved the laundry room upstairs and did this?

You will have to excuse some of my photos since my husband is the one that put them together but I hope you can understand the idea we are trying to show...different placement of pantry, etc

We are adding a garage which allows us to have a bigger mudroom and laundry....But maybe we should move the laundry to the second floor (put it in the second floor
Linen closet and SPARE bedroom closet (which would be about the same space as there would be if we left it on the main level).

By moving it upstairs we get a much bigger mudroom (which could still have a stackable washer and dryer for kids snowsuits, clothes, dish rags, etc)
