Bur oak acorns.

Interesting... i looked at the images of bur oak.. you're right. But the tree and the bark especially appear to be white oak. I thought the acorns appear after 20 years.. no way the tree is that old

can i plant these?

I have 5ft., 3/4" dia. bur oak in the wild with acorns. Guessing 6-7 years old.

Pick acorns in mid to late Sept. on into October, once they turn brown they're ripe. Make sure there is no little 'hole' in the hard shell, that's means a worm beat you to it.

I've never started oak from seed.

ETA: Bark on bur oak can vary in appearance, the leaves and acorns are a dead giveaway.

Pic of leaves? A few other oaks have acorns like that, including the Japanese sawtooth oak. I doubt those acorns you show are ripe & so won't grow.

Rather than potting up, I would suggest planting directly at the spot you intend to grow it, marking it with a stake, and let nature take its course. Acorns typically sprout easily and grow fast.

The front yard of my former house (eastern ontario, canada) was lined with 3 mature oak trees, don't know what kind they were, but I can attest to the fact that acorns grow easily. The squirrels would bury them all over, I was often pulling up the little sprouting acorns from my garden. It required a bit of a pull cause the acorns were still attached underground. For some reason that amused me, loved those wee tiny baby oak trees!
