Does my living/dining combo work?

I moved and decided that the living room is big enough for my comfy dining table also. It's a soft green. I know the rug is on the small side, yes? I plan on hanging the ocean art above the white sofa it's leaning up against. It's got aqua in it, and there are some other aqua accents such as lamp, pillow. So...now the questions; Does this room work? I love everything and don't mind two different styles in one room. I want to paint the walls a soft, silvery grey. I was thinking SW 7064 passive or 1456 stone eagle. Any feedback on that? Should I get a different painting and pick up another color rather than aqua?

You've shown us two corners of the room Right now, the rugs are both too small. Can you post more pix and ones that will enlarge when we click on them. Show us all of the room, especially the focal point (view, fireplace, etc.)

I agree and we need to see the whole space and a bit more info like is there a TV in the space ? Is this the only spot for the DR? Right now I see no real life in the space it is all a bit showroom in a store , Too much matchy matchy. Is the painting something you bought to “go with “ the space or something you love?

Thanks for much for the input. Here are more photos. Please disregard all the stuff like boxes, barbie

outside etc. I took out small rug by sofas, moved larger rug over there from the dining area. Do you like that better? There is a kitchen nook in addition to this dining area, but I do like having both of these arrangments in the room because both are super comfy and I think it fits. What do you think of paining the living room

walls that are now currently blue, a light grey, and then pair that with a soft yellow in the stair case? I love that color combo and Klimt painting has a great yellow I'd like to use. :)

I also took out the ocean painting, and I will be looking for something else with better colors (not sure what color though) and add new lamp, pillows etc.

I think BevFladeziner has some real solutions. Right now the space feels dark and lifeless. I think you need to paint the room a lighter color for sure and turn the table the way Bev has it. The table looks crammed into a corner otherwise.

Thanks, Ina. Yep a softer light color would help the dining table not fade away. If the walls were a softer color the art would stand out from them.

IKEA Besta series could provide you with a lower unit for the TV.

Or maybe place the TV on the far wall with sofas facing one another.

She said she's planning to paint the walls a soft light grey so that solves the too-saturated blue problem.

I think if you're going to have the dining set there, you'll need to remove whatever is behind it along the wall (sideboard?) so it doesn't look cramped. I like Bev's idea of turning it sideways.

I don't think gray paint is going to look good with the tile color and carpet color on the stairs.

I'd suggest a light beige for walls that blends with the tile and the carpet. To begin with, I'd get a color as close as I could but be prepared to repaint once you add other colors to the room. With a clean palette you'll be able to decide on other colors more easily.

Thanks so much for the suggestions! Now, I don't think grey walls will work bc I see now that the space needs color and some life put into it. Beige is not an option..... Bev, I like the seasalt blue color, but I think it's a bit too pastelly...The dining room table is soft green, but I don't want to emphysize that by carrying that look further. I would like to paint the stairs a warm yellow like part of the background in the Klimt paiting hanging in the landing, so a color that would look great next to that. Maybe similar, but less pastelly? Also, I turned the dining table, and I also re-arranged the sofa/entertainment spot. What do you think of that? Love the rug with the blue giraffe pattern. Where did you see that?

Still shooting pictures the size of a postage stamp?

The changes IMO look good, but the images are so small it's hard for me to embellish them for you. I would keep the blue before I would go to yellow.

Please center the console in the LR on the back wall and equally position the sofas.

Your room is really pretty and with some suggested tweaks will look even better! Since you only have 4 chairs at the table, could you remove the leaf and use it round instead of oval? That would give you more space, visually and actually and maybe make it easier to arrange things.

I like the blue on your walls with your furniture and floor colors. Why did you decide against the painting? If you want something else in the sofa area, what about trying it above the sideboard instead of the mirror? The mirror is a little too fussy and light looking for the more substantial brown furniture. Not sure if the light frame on the painting will work with the sideboard, though.

The larger rug looks better in the living room, the sofas look great facing each other. Not sure from the pic if you can run the rug the opposite direction so both the sofas sit on it. Can't tell if it's wide enough to do that.

Thanks, larger photos attached with everything centered in the room. I like the look. Should I get matching tripod lamps on either side at the endof the sofas, and add the ocean scene painting back in? I didn't think the aqua and bright blues in it looked right with the soft green of the dining table. Do they? Yes, I can remove the leaf and have a round table, but I love the space of the oval. I am also up for painting the black side board with chalk paint,

I think I would remove the leaf. Your room could use the extra space visually

I would recommend you look for new art to really boost up the appearance of the room.

Thanks Beverly! I took the leaf out. Back to the wall color real quick; What do you think of SW 6715 LIme Granita? I was searching for a lively green/gray as Sea Salt blue is lovely, but not exatly what I want.

This is a muted blue green which would blend with the table and the dining room. Love the new arrangement. Here's a photo of it in a room. My sister has it in her living room and it's gorgeous.

Think about the very palest tint of your dining table, almost back white. Then add complementary rugs--layering if needed at living room end--with patterned green, blue, tan (of your floor). Your current natural rugs are fighting with the tile, which has to be taken into account since it takes up so much visual space. The table and tile have the same color intensity. You need more contrast.

Great job on the arrangement. It looks really good to me. Just need to paint walls and accessorize now. I would consider painting the sideboard, but only after painting the walls to see how it feels then. Only reason I would consider painting it is because everything, but the TV is light colors right now so it is a bit jarring to my eye, however it could also be an illusion created by pictures as they never look exactly like in real life.

It's looking good. I think a lovely print fabric on the chairs would really bring them to life.

Hi, I painted the room SW 6422 Shawgreen. I will paint the dining furniture, seems like too much green now, but not sure what colors. I was thinking using grey, yellow and blues as accents, what do you think? How about a black/white large print over the sofa, too bold? I like the colors in the yellow/blue diver art, but it's only 30x30. Any feedback and suggestions are greatly appreciated:)

Just catching up here. I really like the smaller table and turned like you did - it looks like a nice game table instead of a dining table crammed into a living room. It is getting a bit green in there but I like the wall color a lot.

Now I want to bring in other colors. Do you think this will look good over the sofa?

I think you need to have the background be a little more crisp or the green-yello tone will just blend into the wall. If floral is your jam, look for something like these... Keep in mind, that space will require a good size landscape oriented piece or 2-3 of same-sized vertically oriented.

I decided againts florals, now I like this one. .. I can get it almost 50" wide and 40 inches tall. The sofa is 85 inches. What do you think about the size? Thanks:)

I think it would look fabulous! Love the contrast with the round mirror.
With 18" of wall above the sofa
on each side, I think it be perfect. Why don't you mock up the size with some cardboard or painter's tape
and see how the size looks to you?

Under dining table if you're really into aqua/teal and your greens. To me, yellow/green and blue/green are pleasant together. If green is on all walls, maybe just bits of green is ok.

Do you guys like this Ikat rug for my living room with the new art over the sofa? I am also not sure about size. The current jute rug is 6 1/2 x10 feet. I was thinking I probably have to get a 8x10. Right? Thanks for helping!!:)

    last modified: 7 years ago

I love that rug and think it would look great with your sofas, but I wonder if it isn't too similar to the painting? Maybe someone will mock it up for you so you can see.

I think it would be nice to bring in a rug with some green in it, too, to reflect that wonderful wall color.

    Magic Carpet thanked Olychick

I love the rug too but your jute rug fits the area so well. Is there a reason you want to change it?

    Magic Carpet thanked katinparadise

I wasn't sure the jute rug works.... I tought it looked OK, but thought the reason for that is because i simply got used to the way it looks. LOL. OK, I may still get that rug but put it under my soon to be purchased new dining table in the same room. Thanks for the input, I'll post more soon because I need lots of help decorating!:)

The jute fits the style of the rooms very well. The other rug would look pretty under your new dining set!
