Garage door help!

last modified: 7 years ago

I am seeking help on which color garage doors to put on our house. I am between white and tan. My front door and gable brackets don’t match so I don’t want to put wood color doors up. Our windows are white and trim and soffit are tan. I am planning on doing tan gutters too.

I'd pick a medium color from the brick. Install white doors and have them painted.

Here is another idea. The green in the gables seems a bit dark.

Maybe a lighter color would brighten up the house a bit.

    Really nice home.

A tan from the brick could work but do also consider the dark color from the color in your gable ends.

Really like your front door. My personal preference would be choose garage doors with a wood finish or wood - look finish, preferably with a row of windows at the top.

White would put a lot of emphasis on the garage doors and, potentially, compete with your front entry door to be the focal point of the front of your home. You might, however, be able to address that with landscaping. You might consider leveling up the yard in front of the porch at least from the door to the driveway so your sidewalk can be level and level with the driveway, leaving the rest of the yard sloped.

I understand that there is a paint that mimics a wood look but I've only seen pictures of it and don't know how it would actually look. Before you even consider that, see if the people at the paint store can tell you an address of someone that used it.

We are still in the building process so we will level things up soon!

Suezbell. I really wanted to do the wood look too. But I am worried that with the door and gable brackets being different already that another wood on the garage doors would be too much.

Don't know why you don't want wood. It would look great with your brick.

    Otherwise, I'd match the siding.

    Not white or tan.

The picture was taken in the evening so the colors do look darker here. This is a new construction home so the siding is here to stay. Lol.

Wood would be my vote. As a second, the color of the siding. Seeing how it looks from groveraxle's mock-ups, though, wood is the definite win in my book.

I am concerned that between the door and the wood gable brackets that it might clash. The door and the brackets already don’t match.

The front door looks different at different times of the day.

Wood doesn't all have to match! People have wood cabinets, wood floors, wood beams, etc. in homes and wood looks good with wood. Look at the forest. Doesn't all match! That mock-up with wood doors really elevates the design of your home. I'd paint the front door (not really, it's too beautiful) before I'd put light color garage doors. Can you not find wood garage doors in a similar color to either the front door or the beams?

These are samples of wood colored garage doors. Which do you guys thinks matches best?

I'd hold the samples up against the wood and then take a picture. Being that there is different light in the different pictures it is hard to tell. The middle and the dark one seems like either could work, but not the light one.

Match the wood of your gable as close as you can. It will look terrific.

What a lot of folks don't understand is the large mass and overbearing scale of front facing garage doors.

The greater the contrast of the garage doors, the greater the garage doors detract and dominate the elevation of any house.

Just look at any of the photos above where there is great contrast between the garage doors and the rest of the house.

    The lesson is:

    1. If you want your garage doors to dominate the front of your house, then create strong contrast;

    2. If the garage doors are not the most important element in the facade of your house, then minimize the contrast to the maximum possible.

Unless of course, you travel by your own airplane:

Also consider the color of the majority of the siding of the house. You don't want orangey wood hues with your brick. With the choices you have, I think Grover's mock up with the dark looks best, but the one with the color of the painted siding also looks really nice.

Groveraxle, I know you've been asked this dozens of times, what what app do you use for changing the color of certain items, e.g., garage doors?

I REALLY like Grover's second pic. Those doors add visual interest without competing with your front door. Having some texture / features / windows in the door is also important - but that pic to me - is VERY handsome and makes the house feel settled and substantial. WELL DONE

(grover uses Photoshop, like I do. it's all manual labor, folks!)

    Thanks, acm.

    acm, thanks.

Mandy, would you be willing to take pics again in the morning or midday? (As you did with your front door.) I feel that we’re all a bit handcuffed by having only pictures from late in the day.

I agree go with the wood that matches your gable. Architects don't like garages on the front, but that's what you have so embrace them. Grover did good work. Best of luck.

We need pix of the house without the dark clouds. But, of the 4 pictures that Grover did, I don't think any of the wood colors are working. I actually like the green doors the best.

But, I still think 'a' wood color would be nice, just not any of those three. The first two are too orange and last one is too dark and foreboding.

Sounds like you want the garage doors to be a focal point.

I will try to get some better pictures soon. Thank you all for you input.
