Backsplash for a modern kitchen

Hi Houzzers,

I love reading everyone's advice which helps inspire me on decorating my house. Right now, I'm overwhelmed and confused on what type of backsplash I should use for my kitchen.

My taste is modern. I'm thinking of white tiles or white tiles with some gray which would brighten up the kitchen. I'm not really into subway tiles.

I was thinking of tiling the entire wall next to the kitchen and tiling the entire wall where the stove is. Would that look ok?

Any advice is appreciated!!!

The paint is agreeable gray and counter top is white with grey veins.

Nice kitchen! You do know the 4-inch piece of quartz up there already is a backsplash, right? I like it how it is now, you have some larger wall spaces and I don’t know how I would tile that. If you want to modernize my advice would be to change the lighting to a more modern lighting and maybe changing the bar stools and kitchen set.

Back painted glass is a modern look I love.

Karen and Zalco -- thanks for the response.

Karen Rose - the 4 -inch piece of quartz seems unfinished to me. My thought is if I tiled the entire wall with white tile it would brighten it up. I agree that I need to update the bar stools and kitchen set. That will be my next project. I'm confused on what you mean be larger wall spaces? Do you mean the wall next to the kitchen is too large to tile?

Zalco - I was thinking about the glass tile. I'm afraid it might be trendy and it would go out of style soon.

Someone suggested to me to get larger tiles ie . 12x22. Less grout to clean. However, I 'm not sure it would look ok on the walls that I have.

I just meant the window wall next to the range might look strange if it isn’t tiled, but then again if you tile it it might look too much like a bathroom. Also the way your walls around the range are, it is difficult to figure out where to stop. I would start with the lighting first and then reevaluate.

Here are samples from Arizona tile. From left to right:: Dunes Perl Flat glass tile, Dunes Ivory wave glass tile, 3D white twist and 3d blade white matte. I wanted to get a sample of the Dunes Perl wave but they didn't have a sample of it.

    What do you all think?

Back painted glass isn’t glass tile. It’s panels of glass painted on the back. They come and do a template just like they do for your counters. It looks great, very clean and contemporary, no grout lines to clean, and you can get any color you want. Mine is a silver metallic, and looks beautiful. I have one sheet on each wall, no seams. To clean, just a spritz of windex

Hi Nancy, I love your kitchen and had fun pulling what came to my mind together. I thought mercury glass large tiles on the right side to brighten the space and give it some glamour with some fun geometric tiles with pop of contrast to your cabinets. You might even be able to find hex mercury glass mirror tiles which would pull the geometric patterns together. Have fun!

I have back-painted glass, and I love it!

Nancy, my designer found my fabricator/installer. They create the glass panels and do the painting themselves and then install. It's not something you go and buy at a store. My place did an excellent job color matching the SW color I picked out.

Actually, you can have the glass panels backed with anything, paper, fabric, or paint. HOUZZ has some beautiful examples in Photos.

stillpitpat:: love the color of your glass tile!

mcdb:: that's a nice idea. not sure if it would give it the modern look I'm after

If you want a full backsplash, you should remove the short backsplash before installing the new backsplash. The new backsplash should match the coloring in the counter. If you don’t want a full backsplash, you could install wallpaper or paint the walls to coordinate with the counters.

I was going to suggest either back-painted glass or a relief tile like some of the ones you are already looking at. Porcelanosa has some large format relief tiles. Their Ona Blanco looks like a much larger version of the Dunes Ivory Wave (https://www.porcelanosa-usa.com/products/ona-blanco.html).

A lot of companies that do glass and mirrors also do back-painted glass. Google can help you find local shops, or you can reach out to local glass shops. It's a bit of a specialty, so where you will probably drive how easy it is to find someone who does that kind of work.

Hi Nancy, if youre interested in the backpainted glass, when you’re searching, don’t refer to it as tile, it isn’t tile, rather whole sheets of glass that cover the entire wall. As someone else noted, some glass/mirror places do them. I actually had a pretty hard time finding a company to do mine, but I did find one and they were wonderful. Be aware though that is more expensive than doing tile. For me it was totally worth every penny! If you let us know where you’re located, maybe someone will know a company in your area, that is actually how I found the company that ended up doing mine.
