LP Smartside batten board vs shakes

last modified: 7 years ago

We are starting the process of trying to select either shakes on the 2nd story and on the sunroom (left side of house) or a combination of shakes on sunroom and then batten board on 2nd story. Existing siding is steel which is getting replaced along with new roof. The 1st floor is painted brick 1938 house in Twin Cities.

If you notice in the attached picture we have the somewhat unique variable on the first floor windows, below them, is a batten board look. This matches the 2nd floor siding.

Not sure if we can just cut in a smooth piece here, if we decided to go shakes on 2nd floor as batten here would not tie in?

Also trim detail around windows? I assume the existing wrapped brick mold would come off and 1x6 trim would go in. Any other details?

I would do all shakes but leave the batten detail under the windows. I would lose the shutters on the 1st floor windows

I’d keep it to just 2 different products. You already have brick and b&b, so stick with those.
The first floor shutters seem strange in their length. Maybe a talented Houzzer can photoshop doing those shutters to the exact window length, or just remove them.
    Nice house!

I vote for brick with board-and-batten only. The third exterior finish would clash.

@PPF. I have some more technical questions on LP perfection shake would you by chance be willing to offer some help? Whats the best way to connect?

I have some more technical questions on LP perfection shingle

Your best source for information is LP or your local supplier.

Did I comment on this thread -- don't see anything above.

Sorry, no you hadn't commented. I have noticed a few posts from you on siding materials and was hopeful to get some feedback. The suppliers answers to my questions have been somewhat disappointing.

Really just trying to get a sense of performance for the LP Perfection smooth shake vs Hardie's smooth shake. In addition to batten board look vs shakes.

I used them (textured, not smooth) on this one small project about 5 years ago, basically as a test. No issues with installation and they look today like they did when they went up.

And this is what winter looks like just down the street.

No experience with the Hardie product, but generally try to stay away from their products. Pain to install and installation needs to be perfect.

Thanks Jon appreciate the feedback. The fiber products from LP (vs strand) I thought I remember reading some performance concerns, but now that I think about it, may been have been related to the lap siding product.

Sounds like LP came out with a lap strand board earlier this year, we have been looking for some examples of the smooth strand in our area as we don't really care for the textured look. The contractors and suppliers we have spoke dont seem really to familar with it smooth strand.

LP has had a textured lap strand based product for years, and a smooth fiber based lap (used on the lower part of the shed above), and have recently introduced a smooth lap strand based product. I'm waiting on samples of this product now.

Does anyone have rules of thumb for picking out the reveal/exposure when picking siding. Current siding is close to 8'' on the picture above. LP exposure/reveal we are considering is either the 6" or 7". And does the siding reveal then dictate the trim size, e.g. corner boards

12" piece of the new strand based smooth LP Smart Sining. Probably not easy to see but it's not smooth, there is a texture.

    Closeup.

Thanks @PPF a few comments. Found out recently My local wholesaler who prefinishes LP stopped finishing the smooth due to finish bubbling (supposedly was coming to with high moisture count). So we're going the textured route

@PPF Any insight on selecting 6" vs 7" reveal? Haven't really come across any information on things to consider to make this decision. Any insight or variables to take in acct? I did read one comment from a contractor who said 95% of installs he does is the 7" reveal. Our is 1938 house in the city, not in the surburbs.

How do you like the proportions on the house Beverly posted above? The reveal looks closer to 11" on the shakes -- which would look really good on your house.

8" Hardie siding (7" reveal) is everywhere, and I'd prefer larger.

Trim should be painted to match the siding I think, so its size is less important.

Looking again at your house, is the brick only on the front?

@PPF brick is only in front on 1st level. We're pretty locked into doing the Perfection LP smooth shake with 6.5" reveal. The lap siding reveal which will be on the side and rear is what we're struggling with. We are going with LP

I'm confused I guess. You were asking about shakes on the 2nd floor and sunroom and I thought that's what we were discussing, and shakes had become the lap siding -- no mention of the 1st floor siding which I just noticed. I assumed the 1st floor was all brick.

If you are doing shakes on the sunroom, then the lap siding should match so they look best in the corners where they are together.

I like the board and batten (not batten board) that's there now. If you decide on shakes, consider an alternating reveal (2" and 7"--experiment). It's a great look with subtle detail, although it will take more shakes.

The shutters look to be too narrow to be real and they are clearly mounted without hinges (obvious because of the black-on-white contrast), making them look fake. Fix the width and the mounting if you plan to keep shutters (I wouldn't). And the shutters on the lower front should not extend down past the actual windows.

@ppf sorry for the confusion. We ended up deciding on shakes for 2nd floor and sunroom front. The LP shakes come in 6.5" reveal and the closest reveal in the textured lap would be 6.875". Sounds like your saying get the shake reveal and lap reveal close as possible

Here is what I'm suggesting you try to avoid -- see the change from shakes on the left to lap on the right in the corner.

    Which siding are you considering?

I think you should reconsider the smooth. The textured is rather rustic.

@PPF. I am not sure if your suggesting going with smooth or rustic? Right now the plan is

cedar texture lap, perfetion shingle/shake (rough sawin texture) and I think smooth for the trim.
