It might get taller than you want, but I have had Turk’s Cap growing under Live Oaks. Others I’ve had success with: Elephant Ears, various ferns, variegated monkey grass, plumbago (it flowered a little less, but still looked nice), various salvias (my light purple greggiis bloom more in partial shade than red ones for some reason), hardy mums, dwarf cannas (although they prefer sun), Astilbe, dwarf Nandinas, Corkscrew Rush (needs consistently moist soil) ... to name a few. There are a few succulents that can thrive in shady conditions, too.

*I’m in N Texas, 8a, alkaline soil. If you have more of an acidic soil, there are plenty of other choices in addition to these. :)

Where you are is important, not just zone. Can you give us a location? For instance, what grows in my brother’s zone 5 in the foothills near Denver is quite different from what I grow here in NH because our rainfall, soil pH, and average winter temperature are so different.

With more info, you will get more suggestions.
