Ha! We moved them to the side of the yard when we were doing some work and do not want to randomly dig holes later looking for them. I’m also eager to move them but don’t want to kill them.

Haha! Glad to know you’re not planning a midnight theft!! Now is a good time to plant. If you wait too long to plant the roots may not get established before a freeze sets in. I don’t know what zone you are in. I’m in Milwaukee WI and freeze can come as early as late October. Give the roots at least 6 weeks to acclimate. Oh, buy some cheap plant markers or even tongue depressors to mark what hostas you plant where. Good luck!

You can move a hosta anytime. They are tough. Just get lots of roots and water them thoroughly in their new home.

No need for tongue depressors, lol, just don’t remove the flower scapes entirely. They are great markers through the winter and very easy to remove in the spring.

I've moved (and planted new ones) lots of times in Aug, Sept and October..the hosta were just fine..

imo.. the only concern.. is very small clumps .. that might heave in late winter or early spring.. if there isnt good snow cover ...

larger clumps... are of no concern ... just do it ...

dont be concerned.. if they go dormant a little early

and if you want to teach them a lesson for some reason ... throw them on the driveway for a month ... they wont care ...

do the job.. and dont worry about them.. after you give them a good deep drink ...

I did lose hostas Couple of years ago that I planted in late August. I am always very good about watering new ones. But next spring, several didn’t return. Not sure why. I always thought I planted too late???????
